Roberto De Vicenzo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 1, 2017.
Roberto De Vicenzo, an Argentine golf legend, has died at the age of 94, according to multiple news sources.

The PGA Tour confirmed that De Vicenzo died Thursday, June 1, 2017, in his native Argentina.

De Vicenzo was the second-oldest living major champion and the winner of more than 230 professional tournaments. He won eight PGA tournaments with his biggest victory coming at the Open (British Open) in 1967.

At the 1967 Open Championship played at Royal Liverpool, De Vicenzo won his only major title by two strokes over Jack Nicklaus. Nicklaus told The Associated Press that De Vicenzo was a “great friend.”

“He was a nice man, a nice player,” Nicklaus said. “We had only one time that we came down the stretch playing against each other, which was the British Open in '67. I think he birdied 17 and I didn't birdie 17. He represented his country, he represented the game of golf. He was one of the really good guys.”

De Vicenzo was famously known for a scorecard error that happened at the 1968 Masters tournament. During the final round, De Vicenzo made a birdie 3 at the 17th hole. Tommy Aaron, who was playing with De Vicenzo for that round, made a mistake on De Vicenzo’s scorecard, writing down a 4. De Vicenzo did not notice the mistake and signed the scorecard. Under the rules in place, the golfer was required to take the 4. He ended up tied with Bob Goalby, who went on to win the Masters, defeating De Vicenzo in an 18-hole playoff the following day.

“What a stupid I am,” said a disappointed De Vicenzo after the error happened.

De Vicenzo was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1989. He played on the PGA Senior Tour, winning the 1980 U.S. Senior Open. He also represented Argentina 15 times in the Canada Cup/World Cup.
