USS Fitzgerald Sailors Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 18, 2017.
7 U.S. sailors have been found dead after the USS Fitzgerald collided with a cargo ship on Friday, according to multiple news sources.

The U.S. 7th Fleet said in a statement Sunday morning local time that "a number of sailors that were missing" were found in flooded compartments. The fleet commander said that the search and rescue effort has ended. A defense official told NBC News that the bodies of all seven sailors have been found.

"I ask that you [keep] your thoughts and prayers for the family members and the crew," U.S. 7th Fleet commander Vice Admiral Joseph P. Aucoin said at a press conference Sunday afternoon local time.

The USS Fitzgerald collided with the Philippine-flagged merchant ship the ACX Crystal at around 2:30 a.m. Saturday local time (1:30 p.m. Friday ET) about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, officials said.

Vice Admiral Aucoin said "The crew had to fight the ship to keep it above the surface. So it was traumatic," Aucoin said, calling the crew’s efforts heroic. "I can't tell you how proud I am of the crew for what they did to save the ship," he said.

Rear Admiral Charles Williams, commander of Task Force 70, in a statement earlier praised the "extraordinary courage" of the Fitzgerald's sailors in stabilizing the ship and sailing the vessel back to Yokosuka under "exceptionally trying circumstances."

As a former Fire Controlman Chief I feel proud to have shared the rating of a hero. People who have never served in our military will never understand why these brave people do what they do. I want to tell the family something you already know but want to express. They can never be replaced but will always be heros. God Bless them and your family.

So tragic. My son is a reservist in the Navy and he and his family live in Yokosuka. I have visited the base. This incident seems more personal and close to my heart. The sailors who lost their lives were brave servants to our great nation. May God bless their families and bring them comfort in your loving arms. And may God bless the naval family at this sad time.

My deepest condolences to the families of the injured and fallen Navy personnel. Thank you for serving. My dad was in the Navy and stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Korean War. My mom was born and raised in Hawaii and was on her way to Sunday School on December 7, 1941, when Pearl Harbor was attacked. So the Navy holds a special place in my family's heart. God be with you. "Oh hear us when we cry to You for those in peril on the sea."

To the families of my fallen brothers, I send my deepest condolences. My heart hurts for the lives unrealized, and for the families, and shipmates that must now bury them. This is so tragic... Please--always remember our service men and women in your prayers. They are for the most part, very young people just starting out on their life's journey. They give unselfishly of themselves every day in order that we can remain free. God bless all of your souls, and God bless your families. Godspeed...
