D.L. Menard Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 28, 2017.
Cajun music star Doris Leon “D.L.” Menard, who earned the moniker the Cajun Hank Williams for songs such as “The Back Door,” died Thursday, July 27, 2017, according to the Daily Advertiser. He was 85.

Born April 14, 1932, in Erath, Louisiana, Menard began his career in music while still a teen, and continued performing throughout his life, last playing in public July 2, 2017, in his hometown, where he still resided. His signature song, “The Back Door,” was originally released in 1962 as “La Porte en Arriere.” The song, a tale of a tipsy man sneaking into his house by the back door, has become a standard for its genre, covered by dozens of artists and learned by nearly every musician of the category.

Menard is also credited with innovating a now characteristic style of guitar strumming in Cajun music, one that combines up-and-down strumming with bass note runs when the chords change.

“The Back Door” sold more than 500,000 copies in the year following its release and more than 1 million to date. Menard, who was nominated for Grammy awards in 1993 and 2010, is honored in both the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and the Cajun Music Hall of Fame. In 1994, he was named a national heritage fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts.

While his music career flourished, including trips abroad with the U.S. State Department as a goodwill ambassador, Menard also maintained a career as an artisan chair maker.

Menard is survived by seven children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louella.

Mr. Menard had an incredible gift that transcended age, ethnicity, and as all will see, time. I live in another region of the country now and did not realize he had passed. Although I didn't have the pleasure of seeing him perform, I heard a great deal of his music. He was a trailblazer for Cajun music and we all owe him a debt of gratitude. I'm not certain what we will be doing it heaven, but if it pertains to music, Mr. Menard has found a guitar and the angles are doing the two step.

DL was loved by all who knew him. I had the privilege to meet him at a music festival in Connecticut at Strawberry Park. He loved to talk to his fans after he was finished playing and he had the most wonderful personality, such humor, high energy and charm. In 2004 he went to Congres Mondial Acadian in Nova Scotia for the 400 year anniversary of Acadians coming to Nova Scotia. My parents and I met him again. He was so wonderful. My parents and I will never forget that day at Church Point, Nova Scotia spending time talking with DL and his friends. I love his music and I give his CDs to my Acadian cousins in New Brunswick and tell them what a great man he is. He will never be forgotten and he is missed by so many all over the world.

D.L. Menard gave to us, in our own words, a song that will live forever--our "Cajun National Anthem" that is known world-wide. That would be enough for some people; to that, he leaves a legacy of loving south Louisiana enough to have lived here his whole life and raising his family here. Thank you, Mr. Menard, for sharing your gift of music with us and condolences from a grateful people to your family, friends and loved ones on your passing.
