Simeon Wright Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 5, 2017.
CHICAGO (AP) — Simeon Wright, who was with his cousin Emmett Till when the Chicago boy was kidnapped in 1955 after whistling at a white woman in Mississippi, has died. He was 74.

Till, who was 14, spent the summer of 1955 visiting relatives in Mississippi and was kidnapped, tortured and killed after whistling at a white woman working at a store in the rural hamlet of Money. His death galvanized the civil rights movement when his mother, Mamie Till Mobley, insisted on an open-casket funeral in Chicago to show the world her son's mutilated body.

Wright's cousin, Airickca Gordon-Taylor, said Tuesday that Wright died of cancer Monday at his Chicago-area home. Wright described Till as a "fun-loving guy," and said he witnessed his cousin whistle at Carolyn Bryant as a group of boys left Bryant's Grocery & Meat Market after buying snacks on Aug. 24, 1955.

"It scared us half to death," Wright recalled at the University of Mississippi in October 2010. "Some said, 'Why'd he do it?' I said, I think he just wanted us to laugh. He wasn't trying to be fresh. He just wanted to let the boys in Mississippi know, 'Hey, I'm from Chicago. I can do this. I'm not afraid.' He had no idea what was going to happen."

Wright, who was 12, was sharing a bed with Till on Aug. 28, 1955, when he saw J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant come into his family's home with pistols and kidnap Till. Roy Bryant was married to Carolyn Bryant, and Milam was his half brother. An all-white Mississippi jury acquitted the two men in Till's death, but they later confessed in a magazine interview.

Wright said the verdict was unjust.

"So if you ever get on a jury, if the evidence is there, regardless of what color the person is, do the right thing," Wright said in 2010. "If they had done the right thing back in 1955, we would've forgotten about Emmett right now. But the verdict enraged everybody."

Wright's wife, Annie Wright, told the Chicago Tribune her husband lived quietly in suburban Chicago for much of his life, but in the 2000s he became more vocal about Till. Wright published a book, "Simeon's Story: An Eyewitness Account of the Kidnapping of Emmett Till," including a chapter on the night Till was abducted.

"He really wanted people to know what happened that night," Annie Wright said. "There were so many versions. When I first met him, he never talked about it. But then he wanted people to know the injustices and indignities."

At the University of Mississippi in 2010, Wright recalled that his own mother cried and pleaded with the men not to take Till.

"I just can't describe it," Wright said. "It's a night I'll never forget. Yet, I'm not bitter."

Wright said he found comfort in his Christian faith and realized when he was in his 20s that "hatred would kill you or get you killed."

February 11, 2021. I am Sooo sorry for his loss. Simeon Wright made a great impression on me with his knowledge and great conversation on past history. It were as if he was on a non stop mission from God to get the real truth out about his cousin Emmitt Till. I am praying for his wife and family and offer my deepest sympathies.

Sincerely,

[ My time spent with Simeon Wright was quite fulfilling and prosperous. Simeon was fervent in his visit to Houston, to set the Real Emmitt Till story straight as he coupled speaking engagements and book signing all in one.
Simeon was introduced to me thru Mrs Florence Bradford, first with phone calls he made to me, then in person. Simeon wanted me to help him share his story as an eyewitness, to what Emmitt really did while he was at the store and the kidnapping and lynching that followed. I was full of idea's and happy to accommodate him on places to share the truth about his cousin. We arranged for him to go to Madison High School, every student had a chance to sit, listen and respond to Simeon in assembly. The kids were astounded and many did not know the Emmitt Till story. We visited the Black Heritage Society Office and he had great dialogue with the BHS Founder, Ovide Duncantell. Simeon was scheduled in the same day as an invited guest speaker to tell the Emmitt Till Story on the Deborah Duncan TV Show. We stopped at Rays BBQ on OST and spoke to the patrons there. We later visited the SHAPE Center Elders in a close nit gathering along with the Founder, Deloyd Parker. As park of Black History Celebration in Missouri City, we hosted a full house gathering at the Multi Service Center on Fuqua.

I am very sad to learn Mr. Wright passed away about 2 years ago. I wish I would have known him in life. I have researched the killing of Emmett Till for years and I grew to admire and respect Mr. Wright. I hope he is in heaven having a piece of gum and a soda with Emmett.

I have watched "The untold story of Emmett Till" and I was moved by the quiet strength and dignity of Mr. Moses Wright and his amazing family, who witnessed and lived an unspeakable tradgedy which culminated in the death of young Emmett Till. His story is eloquently told in the passionate statements by those who witnessed this dark saga, along with Emmett's cousin, Mr. Simeon Wright. The agony suffered on that painful journey by this family, stands as a living legacy of strength of our people. Thank-you Mr. Wright for your courage, and your story of determination. You made your family and a people.....proud

I remembered as a girl seeing his cousin's picture in the Jet Magazine. My mother's hometown was Georgia and racism was bad, but not so bad in her area. So, I knew about the hatred in Mississippi and never wanted to live there. What I appreciated about Mr Wright's faith love conquers hatred anyday. One day on this beautiful earth there will be no evil and racism is evil. Psalms 37:9. People will love one another as Jesus loves us all remember he died for all mankind. I am praying that the years you had Mr Simeon Wright with you those memories will make you smile at times. I am praying for his family to have peace.

I'm so sorry for the family's loss. Knowing that your loved one was with young Emmett Till when he was kidnapped stirs memories of horrors that so many have experienced. It was never part of God's purpose that man dominate man. It has only led to misery. Our loving Creator has determined a time when all the wrongs of human history will be blotted out and life restored as he originally purposed.

may God bless, comfort, and strengthen this family and loved ones.to have witnessed one of the most heinous crimes in this nations history which stirred the souls of so many was in itself a lifelong burden.so glad to know he had the strength to not hold onto bitterness.i recall learning when i was 11 years old,the casket-laden body left an indelible mark of bitterness in my mind and heart.only by a growing faith, and trust in God have i been able to rid myself of the angry and unkind thoughts from that event.however, memories are repeatedly recalled in seeing so much injustice in this society 62 years later. hoping more of us can have the courage of Mr. Simeon.

The Lord put him on this earth to bear witness to one of the worst acts that men can committ. Little did those two men know at that time was what they did, instigated the Montgomery Bus Boycott later in December. Simeon lived his life as a good and decent man and in his later years spoke publicly about the horror he witnessed. He found the courage to forgive the now decease men. I never met Simeon Wright, but I wish I had, even if for a short time so I could tell him how proud he should feel about himself. May he Rest In Peace in everlasting paradise with Emmett.
