Harry Dean Stanton Obituary
Born July 24, 1926, in West Irvine, Kentucky, Stanton grew up singing and faced an early decision between music and acting. Acting won, but many years of struggle would pass before Stanton would become a household name.

His first movie roles came in the mid-1950s: an uncredited part in "The Wrong Man" and turns in "Tomahawk Trail" and "The Proud Rebel" as Dean Stanton. He appeared on several TV shows, including "The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents." He began attracting notice in higher-profile movies such as "Aliens," "Private Benjamin" and "Escape From New York," but it was with 1984's "Paris, Texas" that he rose to star status.
"Paris, Texas" stars Stanton as a wanderer with amnesia who finds and reconnects with his family. Directed by Wim Wenders, the film proved extremely well-received, winning the Palme d'Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and the BAFTA Award for best director. It holds an impressive 100 percent fresh rating on the movie review site RottenTomatoes.com.
After the success of "Paris, Texas," more notable roles followed for Stanton. He starred in the cult classic "Repo Man" and played a hard-to-love father in "Pretty in Pink." He had roles in "The Last Temptation of Christ," "Wild at Heart," "The Green Mile" and dozens more. In 2006, Stanton took a prominent TV role on the HBO drama "Big Love," playing the megalomaniacal leader of a polygamous sect.
Stanton has been honored with the annual Harry Dean Stanton Film Festival in Lexington, Kentucky. He was the subject of the 2013 documentary "Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction."

I was always so Proud to say Harry Dean was from Ky originally, as am I. There's something about those born in Eastern Ky that makes us cling together. Perhaps it the Scotch-Irish clannish settlers of the area. At any rate, he was just as good an actor as his best two friends and neighbors on Mulholland Drive in Hollywood: Marlon Brando and Jack Nicholson. RIP, dear Kentuckian!!!

I first heard of Harry Dean Stanton when I went to the movie theater to see 1979's 'Alien', a film I love. Also loved him in 'The Green Mile' and a brief role in 1999's 'The Straight Story'. Indeed an actor that was talented and one of a kind. Thank you for your great film work. You might be gone, but will not ever be forgotten. Rest in peace.

Some day there will be a Hall of Fame dedicated to the great and largely unheralded character actors from American film, and the hall should be named after Harry Dean Stanton. Its certainly not true that Harry was unknown; quite the opposite is true. But actors like Harry represent the pillars of American film. Their roles were usually smaller, and they required the actor to blend, not stand out. American cinema would be nowhere without the likes of Harry Dean Stanton. Thank you Harry. You were a master craftsman.

I loved your movies, you were a tremendous actor . I loved the characters you played ,like in Alien,Pretty in Pink you were great in that movie. Also Kelly's Hero's , Dillinger,but the best roll I liked was in The Godfather part 2. To me I loved most of the films you played in. Some of your earlier movies kept me interested but that's when you were just starting out in movies Tomahawk trail I liked that and a couple more of your startup stuff.
