Naomi Parker Fraley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 23, 2018.
LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - A woman identified by a scholar as the inspiration for Rosie the Riveter, the iconic female World War II factory worker, has died in Washington state.

The New York Times reports that Naomi Parker Fraley died Saturday in Longview. She was 96.

Multiple women have been identified over the years as possible models for Rosie, but a Seton Hall University professor in 2016 focused on Fraley as the true inspiration.

James J. Kimble published his findings in the journal Rhetoric & Public Affairs, saying a photo of Fraley at work was the basis for a widely seen poster of a woman flexing with the caption, "We can do it!"

Fraley was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, she went to work at the Naval Air Station in Alameda, among the first women to do war work there.

Had the privilege of knowing her thru my good friend Maye Tessner-Rood. Her spirit blessed us as a wave of Harrison Rosie's raised funds for the Veterans Freedom Park, as each of us honored a Rosie from our lives. Naomi will live on in our hearts!

Many members of my wife and my families served in WWII; not all returned. I have purchased as a gift from the WWII museum your loved one's photo for both my current work supervisor; and lunch companion after church. Thank you for your loved one's inspiration during a time of unparalleled challenge for our nation; and please accept my condolences during this time.

Oh, Mrs. Fraley, you have been such an inspiration here on Earth for many years, for many people. Now you can shine you warming, caring light throughout Heaven.
My Dad was a WWII Navy gunner on The Shenandoah, guarding all the countries around the Mediterranean Sea & The Rock. I remember growing up seeing your Rosie the Riveter poster on the wall of his home workshop for many years, so I feel like I've known you all my life!!
You have helped so many people, more than you will ever know ... boost & morale during the war, then as an attorney and I'm sure for your community and all who came in contact with you.
Now you can continue your good works helping God with his Heaven!
Bless you, dear Naomi, you have been a good, kind woman all your life. You are the BEST!

Please accept my condolences on this huge loss. I always wondered who the woman was, as depicted in that iconic poster. My own Mom was a teen during those times, as the family was based on West 50th Street in the thirties and forties, NYC. I have always applauded the women who stepped in to do a these jobs in the face of World War 2. I would have loved to have known her, as up until now, I had no idea who the woman was in that poster. As of now, I will be scouring any information that I can find on this proud, and one of the first, women who stepped up to the plate and did her bit for the war effort. Bless her and her family. To the Family of Naomi Fraley:

My deepest condolences for the loss of Ms. Fraley. Because of her poster and the fervor of the war effort, my mother also joined the ranks of Rosie's. She worked in a factory manufacturing valves, rose to rank of foreman overseeing a group of fellow workers,(all male, she was fond or reminding me). She was proud of the work she did, but, at war's end, she went back home to give her job to a returning veteran. God Bless Naomi/Rosie and all the former Rosie's for their dedication to jobs all across America during the war and proving WE CAN DO IT!

So sorry for your loss. It is women like Ms. Fraley who have been an inspiration to the rest of us. I was a sheet metal mechanic working on Naval Aircraft at NAS North Island in San Diego, about 5 years ago. If not for women like Ms Fraley who paved the way for us, we wouldn't be able to do what we do.
Thank you for the legacy!

My deepest condolences,
