I met Jim in Yosemite in the 70's. He came to my office for medical supplies just before he left for Borneo. I am so sorry to hear of his death. Jim was bigger than life and who could doubt that he would live forever.

My condolences to Jim's family and friends for your loss. He sounds like a guy that impacted a lot of lives in the way he approached teaching others his passion for climbing and his zest for adventure. I wish I would have had the pleasure to have met him. One's richness in this life is not always determined by your bank account, but rather by the way you live and help others along the journey. May those who knew him best find peace in knowing the gift he left them during his life.

I am so sorry for your loss of Jim. I was one of the people who took a climbing class from him in Colorado L was very new to climbing and after a couple of days of climbing with him, asked if he had ever climbed in Yosemite. He replied, " A little." I climbed a few times in Yosemite with him also as a novice. He was always patient. He will be missed. LF

Met Jim in Yosemite Valley 1976. There was simply no one like him. on certain faces particularly crack climbing he was peerless. Lived life on his own terms. few of us ever actually do that.

I met Bird in 1970 at Squaw Valley when I was attending grad school at U. of Nevada, Reno. I worked on the ski patrol there part time, and Jim was full time. There were other climbers on the patrol there beside Jim, but Jim was different. The others looked down at me since I was not the greatest skier at the time, and seldom went above step ladder height. Since I was a rookie on the mountain, having worked at Mammoth part time for several years, he took the time to help teach me the Squaw way. He was very intelligent, very kind, non demonstrative, but had an aura about him that others were aware of. He was an elite, everyone knew it, but Jim never played the role. He was simply a good guy, After the season, I moved on and never saw Bird again, but in all my years, he was one of the most impressive people I have met in my 81 years. I never forgot the Bird man.

Jim found his passion and enjoyed his life completing very impressive and dangerous adventures. It is heartbreaking to hear the loss of this life of joy, but he is now peacefully resting in his sleep, as affirmed in Ecclesiastes 5:9,10. My sincerest condolences go out to the friends and family.
