William H. T. Bush Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 3, 2018.
MIAMI (AP) - William Henry Trotter Bush, a wealthy investor and the brother and uncle of presidents, has died. He was 79.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush confirmed Thursday in an email to The Associated Press that his uncle had died. He did not describe the cause.

Jim McGrath, a spokesman for former president George H.W. Bush, said the president's younger brother died Tuesday.

Known as "Bucky" Bush, the brother of President George H.W. Bush, uncle of President George W. Bush and youngest son of Sen. Prescott Sheldon Bush of Connecticut was also active in Republican politics. He chaired his nephew's presidential re-election campaign in Missouri. At the time, he recounted that he used to babysit the future 43rd President of the United States.

Bush also was co-founder and chairman of Bush O'Donnell Investment Advisers in St. Louis, Missouri. Before that, he was president of Boatmen's National Bank of St. Louis. He also served on the boards of numerous corporations and foundations, including WellPoint Inc., now Anthem, the parent company of multiple Blue Cross and Blue Shield health insurers.

At one WellPoint board meeting in 2010, Bush collapsed, bringing an abrupt end to a consumer campaign against insurance premium hikes.

Bush also was put in the spotlight in 2007, when he and other directors of a defense contractor reaped a total of $6 million from what federal regulators called an illegal scheme by two executives to manipulate the timing of stock option grants.

Bush was a non-executive director of St. Louis-based Engineered Support Systems Inc., whose profits were bolstered because of the Iraq war. He was not accused of any personal wrongdoing in a lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, but the agency said he made about $450,000 selling some of his stock in 2005. Bush offered no comment to the AP at the time.

Bush's September 1989 trip to Malta received some humorous notoriety. His brother, then president, asked him about Malta and later decided to hold his first summit with Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev there.

When the weather failed to cooperate for their December 1989 "seasick summit," Bush and others later joked about Bucky's shortcomings as an advance man.

"I'm blameless," said the president's younger brother.

Chairman Todd Graves of the Missouri Republican Party offered his condolences to the Bush family, tweeting that "Bucky Bush was a strong leader and champion for the state of Missouri."

Bucky Bush was one of my 2LT'S IN THE 586TH Engineer Co at Fort Ben; GA
in 1958-1960. I was the company commander at that time, Bucky's wife was
Patty Bush, they had 2 children. It was an indeed fun, happy time, particularly
when father Prescott Bush (CT senator) came to visit us at holiday time. We
have lost track of each other over the years. My memories of "Buck" remain
strong as I traveled frequently to the St Louis area on Army business and we
always got tother for tennis until his mobility started a steep slide. I miss him.

The death of the president, reminded me of my good friend Bucky some 50 years agoj. We both lived in Grenwich, he worked for Hartford and I was his client...he from Yale and I from Harvard graduated in the same year and were both on a fast track in our respective organizations. His warmth and sincerity produced a solid friendship that I deeply cherish as one of the highlights of my business career.

Dear family of Bucky Bush. He was one of my earliest clients (for sales training) when he was at Hartford National and then at Boatman's. He was among the very few who modeled caring deeply about clients, client's needs, and his sales force. Many spoke those words but few lived them. He was candid, caring, honest and a great learner and listener. Plus he and I loved Jim Croce. I lost track of him over the years but have good memories of a decent and high integrity person. The same went, by the way, for his older brother, Prescott, whom i knew well in New York City and Greenwich. Gerald Jones. Hingham MA.

Ironically Bucky has been in my thoughts lately. Only learned today of this sad news. He was a great friend, a generous "boss," brilliant conversationalist and extraordinarily kind person. I was blessed to have known you. Rest in Peace Dear Friend.

Round the Bend And Through the Narrow,
Bucky paddled on Straght as an Arrow.
And on this day, as we celebrate his life,
We know his guide again, is Patty, his wife.

With sorrow, joy and especially celebration, we portage on grateful to have lived in the same community with Bucky and Patty these many years.
A Keewaydin friend.

From George Capen Bitting to Bucky's family - Bucky was a younger friend of mine ever since we went to Keewaydin Camp together in the late 1940's, always a 'good man,' thankful for all his blessings, part of a great and proud American family, with good and strong St Louis roots. God Bless You, Buck, R.I.P.

Every time I crossed paths with Bucky he evoked all of the fine traits of the Bush family. He was a gentleman and had a great sense of humor. I hold him and his entire family in high esteem because of he way he led his life and this world is a lesser place with his absence. I send my sympathy and condolences to all together with a reminder that Bucky is not really gone. He has simply gone ahead.
