Red Schoendienst Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 7, 2018.
Albert Fred “Red” Schoendienst, a baseball Hall-of-Famer who wore a major league uniform as a player, coach, or manager for more than 70 straight seasons, has died at 95.

An excellent defensive second baseman, Schoendienst played 11 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals beginning in 1945, and he contributed to the team’s World Series win in 1946. After a short stint with the New York Giants, Schoendienst was traded to the Milwaukee Braves in 1957, earning 200 hits as he helped the Braves to a World Series win.

In 1961, Schoendienst returned to St. Louis to finish his playing career – during which he hit .300 or higher seven times and amassed an overall .983 fielding percentage, playing on 10 All-Star teams – and immediately began coaching with the Cardinals. In 1965, he was named the Cardinals manager, leading the team to a World Series win in 1967 and continuing in that role through 1976. After two years with the Oakland A’s, he returned to the Cardinals, where he served in various coaching roles for the next several decades.

Schoendienst was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989, and the Cardinals retired his number in 1996. 2015 marked his 70th season wearing a major league uniform as either a player, coach, or manager.

Schoendienst, who was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Eileen (O'Reilly), is survived by his children Colleen, Cathleen, Eileen, and Kevin.

We invite you to share condolences for Red Schoendienst in our Guest Book.

My uncle, Robert ("Bob") Finley from Chillicothe, IL was a good friend of Red's, so he told me when I was young. Uncle "Bob" owned a tavern and told me the story that "Red" either played on or coached the baseball team his tavern sponsored.

I have a picture of Red with my uncle which is quite old that I would be glad to share with you. There are 3 other men in this picture, but I cannot identify the names my uncle noted on the picture except for Gus Mancuso. (The other abbreviated names noted appear to be Ba Canita and Joe Gury).

My Uncle Bob is a hero to me; he served in WW II in Patton's tank division chasing the Desert Fox in Africa. I wish I had caught up with Red to talk to him about Uncle Bob.

The last hero we have from the truly great generation of Cardinals, not discounting our heroes from the 60's and later. A person who is admired and revered by those of more recent generations due to the obvious demonstration of his great character. As a Cardinal fan of 7 decades, the loss of Red and Stan has taken a significant portion of my heart that cannot be replaced. My solace comes in my memories. I cannot realize what I would have sacrificed to meet Red. You are missed dearly.

Dad went to Grade School with Red;'s wife at St. Margarets. She was 'one of the gang', Dad says. WIth his memory slipping, he still remembers her and Red. When they started dating, 'the gang' had to approve of it. When they married, ;the gang' was there. Dad always liked Red as he became a member of 'gang'. That was in the 30s and 40s. God Bless Red and his family. Dad has kept in touch with him all these years and his heart is breaking, for another member of 'the gang' is gone.

I went to a Cards-Cubs game with my Dad in StL as a 9-year-old. Cardinals Red (2b), Marty Marion (ss), Stan the man Musial (lf) & Enos "Country" Slaughter (rf) are my memories from that game, along with cubs Ernie Banks (ss), & Willie the whip Serena (3b). WONDERFUL experience! Red was a GREAT, dependable 2nd baseman. I'll never forget it. RIP, Red.

Rev. Jerry Joyce

June 9, 2018

Hi Folks, my name is Rev. Jerry Joyce. You may know me as the paramedic from New Baden who was friends with Nick Beer and worked the field medical crew in the 82 world series.
The last time I saw Red was when he was with Nick in Breese. Just before Nick died.
Nick had forgotten that Red and I already knew each other. Red and I tried so hard not to laugh as he introduced us. Nick looked at us and said, "What the hell is so funny?!" Red told him we already knew each other. Nick face just dropped. Nick said, "oh yea I forgot." Red look at him and asked, "does this count as an I gotcha?" Nick called us by part of our anatomy. I couldn't understand! (Yeah right)
Red was a man that made everyone feel that they were important.
Over the years I've met several of your aunt's and uncles. They are a wonderful family. His children were his pride and joy.
What I'm trying to say(very badly) he was a great man. Not because of baseball. Because of him as a humanbeing. I in no way am down playing his baseball career. Because it was a great career.
Much love and Blessings headed your way.
May he Rest in the Arms of the God who Created him.
A loving friend,
Jerry
