I learned we were born on the same day AFTER I saw you speak at the 92nd Street Y years ago. I felt a special connection with you, and I marveled at your advanced age with each passing year. Years earlier, I was introduced to your writing by a friend who gave me "Inside, Outside" and, of course, I was immediately hooked on your books. You were a wonderful storyteller and teacher. I learned so much from you, and lots of times laughed out loud at your entertaining writing. God Bless you and keep you, Herman. Rest in peace. With love and admiration,

I was introduced to your work at a very young age by my father, a sixth grade drop-out, former tin can sailor turned letter carrier, and the man that taught me more than all my years of formal education. When we read your books together all those years ago, long before I served in the US Navy, I felt as if there was a third sailor there with us. Thank you for the happiness you gave to a very young boy and a wonderful father struggling to understand each other and the world. Fair winds and following seas, shipmate.

My condolences to Nathaniel, Joseph, and other Wouk family members. Please accept my most sincere and generously emotive sympathy for the passing of your wonderful father, Herman Wouk.
I am Dr. Edwin s. Getz, DMD, retired Navy Commander, and have very special and profoundly fond memories of sitting at a formal dinner table besides Herman in the captain's dinning room aboard the heavy cruiser USS Albany CG-10 while at sea in April of 197. At that time T was a junior lieutenant serving in ship's company as the ship's dental officer under Captain Joseph Ekelund, the commanding officer.
My memories of that very pleasant dinner meeting with appropriately romantic maritime ambiance are fresh in my mind now as I remember talking with Herman about his war-time experiences, about his writing the novel The Caine Mutiny and about his then up-coming novel The Winds Of War, as moon light entered through the portholes. Herman's love and devotion to his family, friends and colleagues was recognized far and wide. He inspired many young men, like myself, to strive for a special place in the journey of life. Even for my brief introduction to the beauty of his soul and creative genius, I have a special memory of your father as gifted story teller, novelist and source of inspirational guidance on that special evening at sea with him. I am but one of many who morns his passing. We shall all remember and respect him as being a profoundly creative novelist and an exceptional and beautiful human being. Edwin S. Getz, DMD, CDR, DC, USNR-Ret.

LCDR (Herman) brought the nuts and bolts of serving on Tin Cans (destroyers) during WW2.
He served in two, both of them built for WW1. Himself and is novels inspired and awed us. He inspired me to serve SM3 to CDR. God speed Herman.

My condolences to the family...
He was a great writer of great books. Having moved to Texas I picked up a great book he wrote" .A Hole in Texas" I t caught my eye at the local bookstore here upon arrival. It was a very interesting novel based on a true story about how during the Clinton administration the government and scientists were building a huge halgon collider like the one in Cern Switzerland in Waxahatchie Texas. They were two thirds complete when the funding fell thru because of the Star Wars project became priority...Anyway it was a great read by a great man and writer! He and his genius will be missed!

I was a fan. As a teenager, I was swept away by the abbreviated version of MARJORIE MORNINGSTAR in READER'S DIGEST CONDENSED BOOKS. Decades later, I read the novel in its entirety and was swept away again, if for different reasons. I also loved CITY BOY. Rest in peace, Mr. Wouk. Thank you for the enlightenment and pleasure of your words.

Best wishes to his family - Herman and Betty were friends of my mother, Helen (Sullivan) Heberger. Mom and Betty were roommates in Long Beach when they met Herman and they remained friends through her life. Our library had all his books and they would visit over the years. R.I.P.
