I was at Underground Atlanta, in the late 1990's, walking around after getting my hair cut. I saw this lady holding a guitar and what I think was a sound engineer talking to her. Had no idea who she was until I looked down and saw her name on her CD! I had no money to buy her cd, no paper and pencil for an autograph and no camera! Will never forget seeing her though.

You definitely earned your keep. Not too many guitarists can shred guitar licks behind their back. The only other guitarist who comes to mind is Jimi Hendrix who did the same, but before Jimi Hendrix you were already doing it long before he came on the scene. In my humble opinion either Chess, Checkers, Motown, Mercury, Capital Records, etc. one of them should have signed you on to their label but they failed to do so and what a shame.

I was in my early 20s when i visited Atlanta Ga and saw and met Mrs. Bev in downtown underground. Her show was the Bev and Red show. Even though i was young i knew she was SPECIAL. As i got older i often wondered how things worked out for her group. Sometimes there's an Angel in our midst and sometimes people miss the opportunity to entertain them. Im glad i had the opportunity to appreciate the moment even if it was just a small moment. GOD Bless Mrs. Beverly.

My Dad is 91years old, and my Mom is 88 years old.
They raised me on the Blues, and Jazz music, but I had never heard Beverly!
A Treasure has left us, but will always be here in her music.

I found out about the Queen of Blues from a documentary. I Found her number and called her. Because I had to know who this legend was. And Mrs. Watkins answered I was calling for mentorship with the guitar. She was kind but busy and said we would talk later as she had a show. My life got worse and I called once again but her phone was busy. My life improved and in the back of my mind I was going to reach out. Until today I researched black female guitarists and saw her name and that she died 4 months ago. I'm very emotional but will continue to press on. Mrs. Watkins was special and struggled at times financially but I hope her later years were good to her. And that she recognized she was greatly appreciated. I hope she knows she touched one girl with a similar dream. R.I. P Mrs. Beverly Guitar Watkins

A great lady and a fantastic musician; absolutely my favorite guitarist. I'm a female musician of the same vintage (keys, bass, vocals, songwriter, teacher) and I know how it feels when music is the life-line, the joy, the therapy, the quest, the struggle, the bliss. Especially blues, the purest music in the world ! I love to listen to Beverly on Youtube. She was/is marvelous. On Rock Me Baby (my favorite) she builds the song until she is dancing with her guitar :) Wonderful. Ecstatic!

Beverly "Guitar" Watkins - We basically grew up in the same town (although she was a few years older). We attended the same church over the years (off and on) depending where we were living. I just discovered Ms. Watkins' music tonight while viewing her on the Internet. I am saddened over her passing, but also for not having had the pleasure of meeting and seeing her perform live. My most heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

FIrst saw her when she was playing the food court in Underground Atlanta during lunch in the early 90's. Just Beverly and a boom box , playing for tips. She was amazing. It was great when she got with MMRF and starting getting gigs, touring and making records. What a tremendous spirit, dedication and love for her music/art. Thank the Lord that she finally got the chance to shine and so many other people got to see this amazing woman. Beverly's lifetime of hard work, perseverance and love for her craft show what a true musician is made of. It was an inspiration and an honor to witness what she accomplished. Rest in Peace.

Such a beautiful and inspiring woman is now asleep waiting for a grand resurrection in Paradise. It was an honor to be inducted in the Alabama Blues Hall of Fame with Momma Watkins this summer. She rocked the house. It was a privilege to play with her around Atlanta and other places. She will be missed.
