I first met Don when I worked as a Nurse Supervisor at Freedom Village in Bradenton around 2013. I was finalizing my med pass when he approached me at the end of a long hallway in the Assisted Living wing. My initial greeting with him was acrimonious as he was struggling with questions (about services) which had gone unanswered. I did my best to address his concerns and reassure him about our provision to services---and so began our friendship.
I again was blessed with spending time with him when I worked at Waters Edge, (2018) also in Bradenton, FL. I will always have the highest regard for him and his late/fallen HERO sailors. Don was more than a member of our "greatest generation" he was a true HERO! I will NEVER FORGET HIM!!!

I had the pleasure of being at Don's funeral, to me it wasn't mourning the loss of Don but to celebrate his new life. He was a man who really enjoyed life to the fullest. Thank you for your service to this great country, its people like you that make this country so great, may your soul rest in peace.

Thank you Mr. Howison, for your character, your courage, your sacrifice, and your service to country. Your defense of freedom provided my family the opportunity growing up in this great country, free to speak, think, worship and live as we choose. May God bless your family and friends with peace and comfort. May your example inspire others and your memory encourage all of us to face danger head on, and never lose hope. Rest in peace

Mr. Don Howison - Thank you for your service in WW2 Aboard USS Indianapolis CA 35 and keeping the worst naval disaster a part of history. You are a part of the Greatest Generation and people will never have to experience the tragedies and actions you went through. Only someone that was there could tell the story of your survival. My dad was on the USS Louisville CA 28 (near sister ship) in WW2 and passed in 2017 at age 92. My dad even met an Indy survivor years ago and the night mares were still there. God bless you and your family.

To the Howison Family and Friends, we send our sincere condolences. Death can cause deep sadness. However, the Scriptures show that death will be eliminated from the earth. Those asleep in death are promised a resurrection back to a peaceful earth to live forever.

This sailor has stood the watch
While some of us were in our bunks at night
This sailor stood the watch
While some of us were in school learning our trade
This shipmate stood the watch
Yes even before some of us were born into this world
This shipmate stood the watch
In those years when the storm clouds of war were seen brewing on the horizon of history
This shipmate stood the watch
Many times he would cast an eye ashore and see his family standing there
needing his guidance and help
needing that hand to hold during those hard times
But he still stood the watch
He stood the watch for twenty years
He stood the watch so that we, our families and
our fellow countrymen could sleep soundly in safety, Each and every night
knowing that a sailor stood the watch
Today we are here to say
'Shipmate... the watch stands relieved
Relieved by those You have trained ,Guided, and Led
Shipmate you stand relieved We have the watch..."
"Boatswain Standby to pipe the side...Shipmate's going Ashore"
