Manu has accompanied me during the last 40 years with his wonderful music and always positive spirit and smile. His music was what we all had in our family common despite the differences in music taste. I saw Manu and his great bands more than 10 times live in concerts and participated in his 70s anniversary concert in Paris.
I am loosing my last Heroe and am very sad and puzzled. His music will live on forever!

"SOUL MAKOSSA" was my introduction to this man and his music. "LILY" was on the flip side of that Atlantic 45.
Manu Dibango was first and so far only musician from Cameroon that I am aware of.
In the 20+ years after being introduced to his music, I was only able to acquire three of his albums here in Virginia although years aftewr their respective release.
Most record departments and stores in this part of Virginia did not stock or carry such unless there was a demand or at least big hits.
After finding bargain record stores and some flea markets while casually browsing, I came across some Manu Dibango.
I had been aware that there were other 45's Atlantic released, but there appeared to be zero promotion.
MTV did not exist until June 1981, then their programming did not include any Black, Country, Folk, Classical, or Jazz videos. Only the Rock their target audience was white males between 15 and 35. After the Japanese (Sony) bought Columbia Records (the oldest, biggest record company in the world) they told MTV that if they would not play Michael Jackson, Sony would pull all of their content.
I do not have cable now and when I last did, MTV was not showing anything of interest this 1958 born male wanted to see.
I just finished four off and on hours watching and listening to Manu Dibango by way of You Tube.
Rest in Peace. You will be missed. I am glad lots of your music was recorded for prosperity. It is a shame you were not one of the artists that appeared on LIVE AID nor at one of the Hampton Jazz Festivals.

I am sorry regarding the loss of your loved one. This disease is terrible. We have so much to contend with without it. I pray they speedily find a cure, so it will not continue to attack ones. May the God of Comfort, continue to comfort the family, during these difficult times.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Manu's family, friends, and fellow fans. One of the joys of my childhood is a busload of kids, listening to the radio, and all singing "Soul Makossa" with enthusiasm and happiness that I still feel when I hear the song. Bless you for the gift of music.
