May God bless the families of this sinless shooting in rural Nova Scotia at this difficult time. Let us pray there comes a time when rational thinking prevails. We hope a time when dealing with issues of any kind no longer involves violence or a gun. My heartfelt prayers and sympathy are to all who have suffered the loss of a family member, friend, or neighbor. May the memories of your dear loved ones live in your hearts and in God's book of life. May the peace promised in Gods word (John 14:27) be active and may you all be helped to endure these difficult times.

Screams and a Whispers
Tragedies like the recent killings in Nova Scotia are like a scream. They jump at us spontaneously without prior warning or reason. They come from nowhere or so it seems and rattle us to our core. They often leave us shaking like a leaf and with scars on our soul that take forever to heal.
Upon hearing of the tragedy in Portapique and other communities, I knew that all of the victims would be strangers to me. And yet I felt the pain. The pain associated with the lost of lives, obviously. So many lives. The pain associated with the families and community in mourning. The pain associated with the randomness of some of the killings and the planned execution of several others. The pain associated with the diabolical execution of a plan. The pain associated with a killer who knew better and had more than most. The pain associated with the incomprehensible, irrational and unpredictable nature of such acts of violence. If you cannot trust your neighbour in Portapique, who can you trust?
Searching to understand what happened is doomed to fail. The truth is there are no answers. There are no explanations. There are no justifications. There are no reasons. There is nothing to understand. Instead, we need to focus our energy on hope and faith. Hope and faith in the goodness of those whose paths we cross. Hope and faith that tomorrow will be better. Hope and faith in life. Hope and faith may appear weak as a response just as a whisper may appear bleak in contrast to a scream. But is it really?
We are surrounded by whispers. Millions of self-effacing acts of beauty, generosity and kindness. The sun that greets us every morning, the grandiose display of starlight at night, spring that returns discreetly with its mosaic of colourful and aromatic flowers, countless birds that will serenade our hearts with their gentle whistle and the fresh breeze that caresses our senses are all examples of nature whispering its love to us. People smiling to strangers, individuals comforting others in need of human warmth, young men and women helping the elderly survive the confinement and, yes, men dying on their way to help a neighbour in need are also examples of love whispered through action. These and millions other are done daily, here and everywhere, now and forever. Do we notice or hear of them? I think not. Like a whisper they go largely unnoticed except to those who are touched by them or take the time to appreciate what surrounds them.
This tragedy came in the particularly difficult context of the pandemic. Understandably, families, relatives, community members and citizens of Nova Scotia are hurting. But they are strong and undeterred by the screaming around them. This is not their first tragedy, nor will it be their last. Each time, they have been able to rise to the challenge of rebuilding their individual and community lives through music or otherwise. It will not be different this time. Nova Scotians know that good news always follow bad ones and that happiness will always defeat sadness. But while screaming has and will re-emerge from time to time in Nova Scotia or in our individual lives, lest we forget to hear the unrelenting whisper of hope and faith in life, people and ourselves.
To the families of the victims, I offer my sincere condolences.

I was born in Lundy Nova Scotia. I am from an Acadian family named, Gerrior. My forefathers came to Nova Scotia in 1632 0n the ship "Esperiance". Captained by Captain Razzilli under the auspices of Cardinal Richelieu. During the Great Dispersion of the Acadian people, my branch of the Gerrior was not captured. We went farther north, joining forces with the Mic mac, Algonquin and other first nation peoples. The name Gerrior means garrison or Soldier. Because we fought so hard for our country, I still feel the pain because of this present tragedy down to my soul. I send my earnest prayers and condolences to all my fellow countrymen. You are in my thoughts and blood always. May God keep you and carry you all through these sad times. I'm so very hurt and sorry for all of you. CAROL GERRIOR PATTON.
