I wrote something, not sure where it went, so I add Dick was an integral member of my favorite team. It culminated in glory for 9 year old me, watching the '64 Title Game, sitting on an upholstered chair, with my parents (Dad was a New York Giants fan, but surely rooting for me that day) and grandmother. Twice I have been in Jim Brown's home and I know how much he admired and liked Dick. I will send the post I am about to write titled "Remembering Dick Schafrath."

To the family, many, many friends, and fans of this great person who played an offensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns to win the NFL Championship in 1964. He had a wonderful career in football. May you find comfort in your wealth of fond memories together with Mr. Dick Schafrath. May the God of comfort bless your grieving hearts with strength, loving kindness and peace as the world copes with the loss of Mr. Schafrath.

I was very sad to learn of the recent passing of Mr. Schafrath.
When I was in 5th grade he came to my South Euclid, Ohio school to give a talk. He spent the better part of the day meeting us kids and sharing what it was like to play for the Cleveland Browns (which I remember well) and maybe some "stay in school" and "follow your dreams" lessons (which I probably forgot by the next day).
What I remember most was how such a giant of a man, bigger than life, a real gladiator, heralding my favorite sport, for my favorite team, every Sunday afternoon, was just so kind, and friendly, and fun. I sat there on the gymnasium floor hanging on every word.
Afterwards, I worked up the courage to ask for his autograph. He said something nice and signed my spiral notebook, and then thrust out this huge baseball mitt of a hand which I tried my best to shake - as manly as possible.
It was the best day of my life back then. And though I never quite lived up to my own dreams of NFL "stardom", like Mr. Schafrath, the event sticks with me to this day, 50 years later.
And, of course, the moment secured my passion for the Cleveland Browns forever.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Schafrath.
And thank you.

My dad, Billy Reynolds, of the Cleveland Browns was a good friend of Dick Schafrath's, and always sung his praises. I have no doubt that my dad, #46, and all of the champion "Brownies" were at Heaven's Gold Posts to welcome Dick Home. The entire Schafrath Family is in my heartfelt prayers!
With Love, Maureen Reynolds-MacGregor

I was privilege to know Dick the past few years when he and his wife started to attend a Bible Study I lead. It brings me joy in the sense that he is now with the Lord in Heaven and in a new body. I'll see you one day Dick. Go #77

We are from Ohio. We lived in Southern California. We came home every Fall to canoe and see family. Mr. Schafrath was at canoe livery morning we went. I saw his name. I said, " I knew of a Schafrath that played for Browns." He said, "That is me." I said, " Yes, and you ran against a politician I knew." He said, "Was he your cousin?" "No." I said. We both laughed. Peace to his family. Jim Thorn

Frequent Pro Bowler, representing the Browns. A true stalwart and star.
I remember when NFL Films featured Dick, during one of their early player "isos" and "wirings" in the late '60s. Dick was lined up opposite the Eagles' Defensive End Gary Pettigrew on that day, and they had some colorful "heat of the battle" exchanges!
Rest in peace, Dick, and job well done during your long and distinguished football career.

I remember running with Dick Schafrath Wednesday mornings at Bonne Bell in Lakewood...along with Jess Bell and the Wednesday morning group. A great guy, may God bless and keep you.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dick a few years ago in our home. I was humbled by his humility and kindness. He shared his memories of Coach Paul Brown and reminisced about playing for the Browns. Our condolences to his family. The most important thing he was proud of was his strong faith in God. Rest In Peace, Dick. You will be missed.

I was very fortunate as a young boy to have Dick as my “Big Brother” with “Big Bothers and Sisters of America”. He went out of his way to be a friend and to teach me about giving back to your community. I recall the joy of him attending my little league baseball games, neighborhood street hockey games, and meeting his sons and family. Dick will always be a positive influence in my growth as a human being.
