I went to see Thich Nhat Hanh on October 30, 1997 in the District of Columbia. He was a masterful Zen Buddhist teacher and has left a legacy on his teachings Being Peace. I was very inspired by his poetry and Zen art which I found in his books over the years. Though I belong to a Theravada Sangha I have found much to learn from all types of practices such as Zen and am so happy I came to know this extraordinary teacher within this lifetime. I like his phrase Being Peace as that is what he did as a practice of meditation. There is no wisdom without meditation and no meditation without wisdom. Best to read his poetry to understand his compassion.

Please accept my sincere condolences to the Hanh Family. Mr. Thich Nhat Hanh toured the world calling for peace, his home country banned him from returning. We have the hope and trust in God that one day there will be peace in a paradise earth for all mankind to live, what a wonderful time, that will be. May the God of all comfort who is the hearer of prayers be with you in your time of need with his loving kindness and peace as He strengthens you to cope during this difficult time. May family, friends and extended family cherish his memories.

You have touched the world with your wisdom, and given all of us the gift of peace and mindfulness. I still have so much to learn from you. I will attempt to take the rest of my journey in this life one step at a time with each of those steps being mindful. I wish I had the opportunity to meet you, but I think your presence has made its impact on me and so many. I thank you. May your journey carry on within all of us.

Teacher, you are more accessible to me now than ever before. Please, explain to my uncle, a Trappist monk in spirit like you, that a person CAN be a Catholic Buddhist. Your lessons have gotten me through decades of strife. Your student forever.

As the light of peace may have grown dimmer a few weeks ago with the passing of Bishop Tutu, it has grown much darker with the passing of Thich Nhat Hanh. We all must work harder to bring more light and more peace.
