I met Ira "Bob" Born when he was a patient at the concierge office I used to work at. When I learned that he was THEE creator of PEEPs and Hot Tamales, I was so excited to meet him.
When he first walked in, I didn't ask him about his reason for visiting the office. Instead, I asked him, "Can I give you a hug?"
Of course, he obliged.
I told him with stars in my eyes how it was an absolute pleasure to meet him and how such sweet treats were a staple of my childhood.... especially Easter. Easter was not complete with the PEEPs. I made him snicker when I told him he was our Willy Wonka.
During my 4-year tenure at the doctor's office, I always looked forward to visits from Bob. Overtime, we had our own little rapport. He was interested in what my hobbies were, of which I told him I wrote poetry. He asked to bring in some of my poetry at his next visit because he wanted to read it. And so, I did. And so, he did...even lending me his feedback and perspectives.
Through ailments that came with age, we bonded. Bob was strong and I remember Dr. Gerstman saying, "we have to get Bob to 100". Although he passed at 98, Bob was beyond 100 in quality of years. I truly believe that.
Bob Born was kind, down to earth, funny, and humble. It was a pleasure meeting him for a short time in both of our lives. I will never forget him and all the joy he brought to my life before finally meeting in person at his doctor's office, of all places.
He was one of my favorite patients.
Rest well Bob Born xo

I just came to know today (06 July 2023) that Bob Born died on 29 January.
I regret the five-months delay in acknowledging this splendid human being.
I have fond memories of the day that Mr. Born invited me to a one-on-one, personal tour of his candy factory in Bethlehem.
I am a Catholic priest, now 85 years old, Prior to 1986, my work was mostly in the Lehigh Valley. I had considerable interchange with two of the synagogues in Allentown: Keneseth Israel and Beth El.
It was within that context that I became acquainted with Mr. Born.
Suffice it to say that I remember him with great respect and warm feelings.
I commend his dear soul to the One and Only God, the Creator and Lover of all of us.

I love the quote he gave to The Rickie Report in 2013 (“I am amazed at the crazy artwork and games people come up with when it comes to our Peeps. I’m constantly surprised at how many contests take place all over and I could not be more delighted!”). It makes me feel good to know that Mr Born got a kick out of the dioramas built with his amazing candies.

Dear Peeps Family,
In Chico California, we eat them and put peeps on the window sills to greet those who pass by. My heart goes out to you during this time of sorrow. May you know the love of Jesus in your heart and be at Peace, especially during this time of sorrow.

Peeps are the best -- and not just for Easter! I'm a big fan of the marshmallow treats and the proud possessor of a Peeps plush toy and a pair of Peeps socks. Your products have put a smile on my face so many, many times, Mr. Born. Thank you!

At almost 68 years in age. I still love my peeps. I confess I can only eat one or two. However, there was a time in my life went 12 hit the spot. RIP, and Thanks for the Easter memories.
