Crushed to have learned two years after the fact of Vince's passing. So hard to accept and simply have to find solace in the "he lived". My Admiral CAPSTONE Class was a veritable who's who of successful leaders but the one who stood out and influenced us all was Vince. My prayers for Phylis and the entire Stewart Family. I can't wait to rendezvous again with Vince.

I´m sorry for your loss. May your memories give you peace and comfort of your loved one. Words fall short of expressing my sorrow for the loss of your loved one. May GOD be with you all during this difficult time. 1 Thessalonians 4:14 For if we have faith that Jesus died and rose again, so too God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in death through Jesus.

General Vincent Stewart is truly a legend in the United States Marine Corps. His decades of service to our country have been nothing short of remarkable, and his dedication to duty and leadership have earned him the respect and admiration of all who have had the privilege of serving with him.

Throughout his career, General Stewart has demonstrated exceptional courage, intelligence, and strategic thinking. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the Marine Corps into the elite fighting force that it is today, and his commitment to the ideals of honor, duty, and country serve as an inspiration to all who know him.

As a Marine, General Stewart faced many challenges and dangers, but he never wavered in his commitment to defending our nation and upholding the values that make our country great. His contributions to the Marine Corps and to our nation as a whole are immeasurable, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations of Marines to come.

My favorite quote from Vincent when we would speak was " I'm living the dream" Vincent was the Chairperson of the ShoulderUP Technology Acquisition Corp (SUAC). He was such a great board member, leader, and a friend.

In short, General Vincent Stewart is a true legend and a hero to all who have had the honor of serving with him. His service to our country will never be forgotten, and his contributions to the Marine Corps and to our nation will continue to be felt for generations to come. Rest in Peace My Good Friend.

General Stewart was always the calm steadfast leader that enable his people to excel. I learned so much about being a leader and caring for people. Seeing his genuine care for people and joy of service has expanded a legacy that will live for generations of leaders of Marines and people by which he influenced.

May God comfort his family and loved ones in this time of his loss but we know his strength and love will always be remembered.

It is still difficult to believe that Vince is no longer with us. In a world where there are very few role models, Vince stood out as a hero. Not because of what he was but because of who he was! Vince always had time to help anyone in need. He saw the “greatness” in each of us even when we did not see it in ourselves. I will always be thankful for the many conversations we had and for his advice and counsel. While he is no longer with us, the world is a better place because of him. And a spark of who Vince was will leave on in all of us that he touched.

General Stewart taught this public affairs officer several key lessons when I served as the DIA spokesman during his tenure. He challenged me, he rebuked me, yet at the end of the day like other leaders I've admired, he always ensured I knew we were on the same team and moving forward together. We are a better nation for his service as DIA Director and as a United States Marine. Semper Fi, Sir.

The General was one of my interviews during my SMD application with Ankura. He was truly kind, inspiring and splendid – imparting on me the level to which I would need to rise as part of the leadership of our firm. I remember he said, that the key attribute of leaders is that others want to follow you, because if you turn around and no one’s behind you – you’re not leading!

Our world’s smaller and sadder without him.

I first met General Stewart as a young hard charging SIGINT officer on the USS Nassau with the 4th Marine Expeditionary Brigade during OPERATION DESERT SHIELD. You learn a lot about a person spending months in a JIC space smaller than most people's bedrooms. We saw each other again as my Battalion Commander at Camp Pendleton in 2000 as I was retiring from the USMC. My best time with General Stewart was when he visited the DIA personnel in Bagram, Afghanistan for Thanksgiving in 2016. He was surprised to see me still in the fight and his presence raised my spirits as I was feeling down after the Battle of Boz Qandahari where we lost Capt Andres Byers and SFC Ryan Gloyer and Afghan Special Forces members. Good memories of a great leader. RIP

I made one of the most important decisions of my personal/professional life when I chose to sit next to Colonel Vince Stewart in Capstone class in 2009. He immediately started giving me grief about DIA which became an on-going routine for us for the next decade or so. He stood out in a group of high achievers by asking tough questions and sharing really insightful observations on EVERYTHING. I attended his promotion to Brigadier General and was moved by his remarks explaining why it was important for him to hold the ceremony at the Military Women's Memorial to honor the women, especially his mom, who contributed to his success. I was honored to have him preside at my retirement ceremony and recall his good humor as he listened to my mother over-share embarrassing stories. As many have noted, we have lost one of the most original thinkers our community has ever had but I feel the most profound sense of loss on behalf of Vince's family. Anyone who has spoken with him recently could sense the true joy he was experiencing in being able to spend time with them after so many years serving the country. Love to the extended Stewart family.

I had the honor of serving as his Director of Security for two of his three years at DIA. I am forever grateful for the lessons (some hard, some subtle, but all fair) he taught me about communication, compassion, empathy, inclusiveness, fairness, and equity. We will forever be connected by our 02.14.2017/0500 conversation in his office where he made a courageous decision with objectivity, clarity and conviction amidst tremendous external divisiveness. This moment left such a lasting impression on me because LtGen Stewart recognized the stress and tension inherent to this national level decision and calmed everyone with his steady strong demeanor. Always appreciated his well placed humor along the way......"Let's arm wrestle over who makes the phone call." Thank you for making us all better humans.

Sir, Most do not know our history, but first meeting you when you worked at the “Commandants” Warfighting Lab, at the time, was a very great experience, and once again when General Gray promoted your to LtCol. We met again prior to our deployment to Iraq, and as one of your G-2 staff officers, you mentored and supported me as we conducted operations to keep our Marines and others safe in our perimeters. Since then, we kept in touch, and I’ve always continued to value and appreciate your mentorship, and I will miss that and all that you were.

Very few people live their life as a living sacrifice to others! DR Stewart did. A man of few words, but immense and deep soul and compassion for others. I am not surprised that contributions are to go to the Marine Corps Scholarship Fund. He knew the difficulties of life and understood the assignment God gave him to help those in whose shoes he had previously walked. He will be greatly missed! May God give comfort and strength to Mrs. Stewart, his children, grandchildren, and extended family!

Sir, you were the embodiment of Jamaica that America got to experience. Thank you for lending us your ear, your voice, and your leadership that made us all the better in service to country. Thank you for every moment you gave me your time as an intern and permanent employee. I’ll always remember the time we spent taking about Kingston or the many pieces of wisdom you gave me as I continued to sharpen my craft. The last conversation we had was about family and that’s what I’ll cherish the most!

Thank you to the entire Stewart family for unselfishly sharing such a gift with the world. Continuing to pray with and for you all as you navigate this new space!

Rest easy sir, we have the watch from here.

Vince was the best America has to offer. Brilliant intelligence officer; outstanding Marine; great leader; true patriot. Whether serving together with Vince in the military, in the IC, or on boards following our retirements, he was always professional, knowledgeable, and thoughtful--I could always count on him for his wise and honest counsel. Most of all, Vince was a wonderful family man, friend, and human being. He will be sorely missed, but Paul and I celebrate the many years he gave us. Condolences to the Stewart Family. Barbara G. I served under LtGen Stewart as a young enlisted Marine in Japan. His mark on my career was indelible. His influence played a large role in my success, in setting the tone for the kind of SNCO and Officer I would later become. His signature is on my wife and I's marriage notification. His signature is on the very first Fitness Report of my career. He pinned on my Sergeant chevrons as Major Stewart, and I'll never forget him doing pushups in front of me, to pump me up, when he pinned on my very first Good Conduct Medal, and said to me as he pinned it on me, "I didn't catch you did I?!" (with a smile). I would go on to serve directly and indirectly under Vince as we both progressed in our careers, most memorably as a CWO, while he was DIRINT, directly presenting our command's plan for his approval. The officers I've read here in his guest book and obituary, I have also served directly and indirectly with over the course of all of our combined careers. Some of them when they were Captains and Majors, who would go on to rise to become Generals themselves, and who were also my Commanding Officers, that enabled me, trusted me, and grew me. We all benefitted from your legacy Sir, and I am honored that I get to claim you Sir, as a significant part of my story, and my family's story. One final memory before I sign off. My wife and I have shared the same dance floor with you General Stewart. When you were the DIRINT, and Guest of Honor at my unit's Ball that year, you immediately recognized my wife and I, from over 20 years previous, and said to us "My children have all grown up"! ... Your speech was memorable, and so were your dance moves. Happy to have shared this ride with you Sir. Semper Fidelis - Eric B. Hiltpold, CWO3, USMC Ret

I send my heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family of General Stewart for your tremendous loss of your husband, father, grandfather, and brother. While my acquaintance with General Stewart was short, his impact has been significant. Several months after General Stewart joined the Friends of the National World War II Memorial Board of Directors in August 2020, my own beloved father passed away. As the executive director of Friends, I felt the need to get right back to work following my Dad's services. Shortly after, General Stewart called me on a Saturday and expressed his sympathy, but also his concern. He expressed that he wanted to make sure I was taking the time I needed to grieve my father. He shared that he knew how difficult it was to lose a father and wanted to make sure I was taking care of myself during this difficult time. I was so overwhelmed and moved by his genuine care, concern, and kindness to me. What a remarkable gentleman! Thank you, Sir, and Rest in Peace.

A Marines' Marine, S/F General

Eric Walters

May 2, 2023

Vince and I served together in 1st Tank Battalion when it was based in Las Flores Area, Camp Pendleton, in 1985; he was the XO of Headquarters and Services Company and enjoyed a reputation as a no-nonsense leader and professional officer of Marines. There was also a side of Vince that those of us who worked with him often saw; that mischievous glint in his eyes and wide dazzling smile when he thought up an unusual solution or innovative approach to a challenge. I was lucky enough to be reacquainted with him years later when he was Commanding Officer of 1st Intelligence Battalion--back at Camp Pendleton--in the year just before 9/11. From then on, we would cross professional paths frequently; I replaced him as the G2 of Marine Forces Command as he went on to take greater responsibilities and achieve ever more significant accomplishments. Yet he never lost that mischievous glint in his eyes and Cheshire cat grin, especially when advising others on a different way to think about things. What I admired most about him was how forthright he was--possessing smooth, persistent tact under the glare of the cameras--when testifying to Congress. Vince always spoke the truth to power and seemed to do so effortlessly. He had an outsized impact not only in the Marine Corps intelligence field, not just on the Marine Corps itself and the Marines he led and collaborated with, but also--through his ruggedly determined devotion--on the country he loved. He made such a difference to so many. Fair winds and following seas, Vince, your legacy of leadership remains with us.

LtGen Stewart was truly a force to be reckoned with. I remember as a 2ndLt at the schoolhouse, he came and spoke to us and getting to know us even though he had only just taken over as DIRINT. Then I ran into him while I was at MCIA and when he asked questions to the analysts he was such a disruptive thinker that it was both maddening and inspiring because he was always onto something in challenging hard kept analyses. My final time encountering him was when he was a guest at the Carolina MCISRE and I was his temp fill in as aide while at Lejeune to discuss how to think like and counteract our adversaries. He put himself in the shoes of the leaders of those countries and spoke like them in a way that was believable and in fact were spot on in how they thought and acted.

These vignettes from my time demonstrate that he was not only a true leader to the Marines, civilians, and other service members in his charge, but also one of the best military minds who demonstrated the breadth of knowledge of meeting the adversary on the cognitive scale and the education and expertise of a true SME in the craft of Intelligence. He will remain an example for years to come for me and I hope to one day live up to his standard of true excellence.

To Vince’s family, I am very sorry for your loss. Vince was a friend and a mentor back in 1985 as my company XO at 1st Tank Bn when I first arrived to the Fleet as a 2nd Lt. Vince was already memorable; he had two axe handles in his office, one large and one small: the labels read “serious blunder beating stick” and “minor mistake correction tool.” I have fond memories of playing the piano in the O Club while Vince would improvise the blues. What a voice! A truly great man and the definition of a fine officer. My deepest condolences to Vince’s family and to those closest to him. You are all in my prayers. May he Rest In Peace.

I know this is a cliché; however General Stewart did light up any room he entered and was very magnetic that you automatically wanted him not only as your leader, but as a mentor. I had the distinct pleasure of working with him while at DIA and it was a true honor. I witnessed how he significantly improved all facets of the Agency throughout his tenure----leaving such a positive impact and mark. General Stewart often spoke very highly about his family and his love for them. My memories of General Stewart is showing me that I mattered and everyone was important no matter your rank...and his passion for others professional development and success.
