Mark, upon my recent retirement from Mattel I can’t help but think back on what a huge part of my 40 years in toys you will always be. March 4th will never be the same because of your memory.

Mark is one of those individuals who came into my life "for a season". I met Mark when I was the Administrative Assistant of Preliminary Design at Kenner in 1981. He was an Industrial Designer, working on the Star Wars line, and simply one of the nicest guys I've ever met. I met his wife, Judy, at various social events when the group got together. After I moved on from Kenner, I ultimately married one of Mark's colleagues, Dale Goldberg. Dale and I had two daughters of our own and enjoyed a long (23 year) marriage. Although now divorced, Dale lives about 4 miles from me and we are still good friends and enjoy visiting our kids and grandkids together. Mark was ALWAYS a Class Act. He was a gentleman. He didn't engage in petty gossip. He was always pleasant, kind and respectful in my presence. We shared some nice conversations and he wasn't a guy who seemed to particularly "judge" others. He seemed to embrace a "live and let live" approach. I knew instinctively that he had a very deep love for his wife and he was a good family man. His gift for design was unsurpassed and it is with sadness that I recently learned of his passing. I am proud to have worked with him (and others in the group at that time) who showed incredible talent and gifted vision. RIP Mark.

Soon after he retired, Mark and I had a long talk reflecting on his career and legacy designing Star Wars toys for 43 years. In his memory, here is an excerpt from our conversation:

"The design process for me starts with knowing the story. Let’s take Star Wars as an example. Whether you do an action figure or a spacecraft, you first need to understand what that character or vehicle is all about. What’s its purpose in the story? How does it relate from one aspect to another? Is the vehicle important to a particular figure? Is it important to the story point?

Being able to understand the story is probably the most important aspect of the process. Because once you understand the story you can start to dig deeper into what the design needs to project and what’s the appropriate scale. Then, you need to think about your stakeholders. What’s the appropriate audience? Is this being designed for a young fan? Is it being designed for a collector?

If you design for collectors, the designs are going to look more authentic and ‘battle worn’. High-end collector items will feature much more complicated detailing than toys that children will actually play with."

His favorite toy was the Millennium Falcon.

May the Force be with you, Mark.

Being Mark's younger cousin by 15 years, I always looked forward to visiting Cincinnati for the holidays because I never knew what kind of cool toys Mark would working on. I remember he constructed a 2 seat X-wing fighter that was really cool. Mark's creativity was amazing and his designs brought joy to millions of us growing up. He had an amazing career and was blessed to have a wonderful family and many friends . Mark will be missed greatly.

Mark will always be part of the Guidry family tree. Distance kept me from knowing him completely. However, our trips did endear him to my heart. He is a saint in heaven now looking down on us and interceding for us to God in any way we ask. My nightly prayers now go to Judy and her family as they adjust to a new journey without their rock. Love them all. God Bless. I am his Aunt and a sister to his mother.

My prayers are with Judy is children and family. My memories go back to when we met at Kenner Toys. He joined the Preliminary Design team as a Co-op student fro UC and later full time designer. He has become well know in the Star Wars universe for his work on the first of many Millenium Falcons toys, first in foam core and then on from there. It was good work with him and seeing him grow. After my leaving Kenner our meetings became occasional but it always good to catch up. I wish you peace now.
