I am a native of Jacksonville and as a youngster I remember George Winterling with his sharpie writing the temperatures down on a local map. I grew up here watching him till I was an adult. There were only 3 tv channels here growing up Channel 12 NBC, 17 ABC, and Channel 4 was CBS then. Of course you had a PBS channel. I remember my grandparents watching George for weather he even had a garden segment he would share with his viewers. He made a huge impact to people and a HUGE impact to channel 4. I'm sorry I didn't write anything before now, it's only after talking to my wife I asked is George still alive. Honestly I don't know how we missed his passing. Our hearts and prayers go to the family.

I was stunned to hear of the passing of the great George Winterling - in 1968, he came to my home in Palatka to interview me (I was approaching 6 years old) about my interest in meteorology. Mr. Winterling had read about my interest in the subject in the Florida Times-Union. He did a feature story on me on WJXT - many years later, I interviewed him on my radio show in NYC - he was indeed a great man and a pioneer in weather forecasting - I will never forget him - deepest condolences to his entire family and friends.

I knew George having been a member of the Jacksonville Weather Watchers in approximately '70. We used to meet at the studio in WJXT where he talked about some aspect of meteorology, which he always made interesting. We crossed paths a number of times, like in '71 when he judged my science fair project, or the following year when he visited my chemistry class at the formerly named Robert E. Lee High School. We'd had the same teacher, Miss Thomas.

He was always cheerful and personable, with a great memory for names. I’m proud to have had known someone as influential, well liked and respected as George, and hope everyone can be as fortunate. George will be missed.

My family grew up watching TV4 and Mr. Winterling. We always enjoyed the way he would present the weather and he was spot on in his prediction of Hurricane Dora.

I meet Mr. Winterling during his tenure at the former home of TV4 and enjoyed our talk. He will be remembered by all who watched him and knew him.

Love to his family and colleagues.

Rest in peace Mr. Winterling.

I remember watching George Winterling when I would come to Florida to visit my grandparents. They always watched George Winterling! They lived in Palm Valley, but sold their property and moved to Jax Beach right after Hurricane Dora! When I moved to N. E. Florida in the 80's I chose to watch George on the WJXT weather report. I remember when he retired, and then came back on with "George's Garden" ! How brilliant he was to have developed the concept of the heat index! I am saddened to learn that George Winterling has passed away!

My Grandmother was an avid gardener so we did not go to bed until she had seen Mr. Winterling’s forecast for the next day so she knew if she was going to be able garden or not. If not, that usually meant a trip to a garden center in St. Augustine.
I grew up with Mr. Winterling’s nightly weather forecast. He was a comforting figure during hurricane and storm season and helped us all feel safer with his forecasts. He will be so missed by everyone here in Jacksonville. We were so lucky to have him call Jacksonville home. Please accept my heartfelt condolences to the Winterling family.

I remember Mr. Winterling growing up watching him tell the weather, growing his garden, and singing in the choir at First Baptist Church of Downtown. A Legend will certainly be missed. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

We are truly saddened to hear about the death of George Winterling, and we send our heartfelt condolences to the Winterling family during this difficult time. We have certainly lost a uniquely talented person. We are thankful he shared his remarkable knowledge about weather and gardening with us and he will certainly be missed. We have lost an exceptional legend and a pioneer in meteorology.

Mr. Winterling had a kind heart and caring spirit, coupled with compassion, and flavored with humor. Because of this he “recognized weather impacted everyone’s day and used his creative talents to literally paint a picture of what viewers should expect.” He is known for sharing his incredible knowledge with viewers, and we are thankful he did. Thank you, Mr. Winterling, for creating and educating us about the heat index. Your work and legacy continue.

Please continue to treasure your good memories and may they soothe your saddened hearts. May prayers strengthen you and cherished memories comfort you, and may God soothe your hearts and comfort you always. Psalm 23

George is a true institution in Jacksonville & rightfully so given his innate sense about the weather. But even greater - was what George stood for. He is everything that was right about t.v. broadcasters - honest but equally sincere. George is sorely missed. Here's to a great legacy.
