Betty Hobson Obituary
Betty Ruth (Erickson) Hobson, 94, retired Tulsa Public School teacher, died of natural causes at her home on Easter Sunday. Services will be held at Asbury Church, 6767 S. Mingo, Tulsa, OK, 74133, at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 30th. Betty, as she was known to friends and family, was born in Verona, Missouri on April 5th, 1928, to Theodore H. and Mabel V. Erickson. Betty grew up near Monet, Missouri on the family farm, graduating high school in Monet, then attended Southwest Missouri College, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Education. During her college years, in 1948, Betty met World War II USMC veteran Darrell Eugene (Gene) Hobson, and they married the following year. Accompanying Gene's Civil Engineering career, Betty went on to teach in Okmulgee, Perkins and Stillwater, Oklahoma. While teaching in Stillwater, Betty went back to school at Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State), graduating with a Master of Science in Education in 1954. Betty and Gene then moved to Tulsa, where they raised two children, Jody and Ted. Betty taught for 27 years, influencing the lives of thousands of young people, many of whom remember her to this day. Betty retired from teaching in 1986 and continued her hobbies of antiquing, gardening, sewing, sailing and volunteering at Philbrook and Mathcounts of Oklahoma, Asbury Methodist Church, and numerous civic and non-profit groups to include the Oklahoma Society for Professional Engineers and the annual Multiple Sclerosis Regatta managed by Windy Crest Sailing Club at Keystone Lake. Known for her eternal optimism and bright smile, Betty is survived by son Ted Hobson, daughter Jody (Hobson) Smith, Jody's husband Powl Smith, and two granddaughters, Alex (Smith) Fredrickson and Caroline Smith. Mrs Betty was my 2nd grade teacher in 1949-50 at Wilson grade school. Her student always loved her and her wonderful personality.
She became a most favorite teacher of most of her students, and she certainly was mine. May Godbless all of your family!
