John Miller Obituary

John Stephen "Jack" Miller

John Stephen "Jack" Miller, 90, died suddenly on Thursday, September 1, 2022 in Richmond, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Anne Snook Miller; his son, John S. Miller Jr., and his wife, Carter Gibbs Miller; his daughter, Rebecca Miller Mahon, and her husband, Bernard Walton Mahon Jr. of Fredericksburg. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Anna, Walton, Sutton Mahon, and Jack and Carrington Miller; and his sister, Marianna Miller Raugh of Hickory, North Carolina.

Jack was born on April 2, 1932 in Charlotte, North Carolina, son of the late James Ross Miller and Rebekah Blankenship Miller. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Ross Miller Jr.

Jack was an engineering, ROTC graduate of North Carolina State University, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order.

After college, Jack served in the Air Force as a fighter pilot for three years. He began his career working as a sales engineer for Tidewater Supply, Machinery Division in Norfolk, Virginia. He met his wife, "Nancy" on a blind date on New Year's Eve, 1958. They were married a year later. Jack was with Tidewater for twenty years, in Norfolk, Greensboro, N.C., and Richmond. In March 1978, Jack and four partners formed, Tencarva Machinery Company, for the four states of Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and Virginia. Today Tencarva spans 11 states and 32 branches. Jack retired as president at age 66 in 1998. Not satisfied with retirement, Jack was active in investing and developing various real estate projects in Virginia and North Carolina.

Jack and his family have enjoyed many years at their home on the water at Gwynn's Island, where he was always busy, fishing, boating, and gardening.

Jack was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, The Country Club of Virginia, The Commonwealth Club, Kiwanis, and past board member of the Tuckahoe YMCA, where he was a regular lap swimmer. He enjoyed dancing with Soixante Plus and golfing with the Blazers, the Nine and Dine, and the Fifty Fivers golf groups.

The family will have a private, graveside service. A celebration of Jack's life will be held at 12 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2022 at The Country Club of Virginia, Westhampton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Division of Cardiology Department of Electrophysiology, VCU Medical Center, Attn: Dr. Kenneth A. Ellenbogen, Box 980036, Richmond, Va. 23298.
