Marilyn Hazel Obituary

Marilyn Hazel

Marilyn Mae Hazel, 88, of Tulsa, OK, passed away from natural causes on Monday, September 12, 2022. She spent her final days in the comfort of family and loved ones. Marilyn was well known for her spirited fun personality and unmatched adoration for her sons and grandchildren.

Marilyn was born in St. Louis, MO, graduating from Southwest High in 1952 and Univ. of Missouri in 1956. She married fellow Missourian, Joseph Hazel, that same year and enjoyed nearly 50 years of marriage, raising three sons. Joe was a prominent scientist in Paleontology and the family lived mainly in Tulsa, Ok; Baton Rouge, LA; and Springfield, VA in support of his career. Early in her marriage, Marilyn taught public school children with cognitive disabilities encouraging inclusion in typical childhood activities. Upon motherhood, she focused on her sons, never missing school or sporting events. She loved family reunions and organizing elaborate parties for birthdays, retirements, and Mardi Gras. Marilyn went back to work at the Louisiana State Legislature as a bill proof-reader but continued to care for Joe's graduate students as genuine family members. Upon Joe's retirement in 2003, the couple made their final move to Tulsa, where Joe passed away in 2006. Marilyn made special friendships at Spicewood Villas in Tulsa. The group frequented many shows, symphonies and happy hours. Marilyn was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church including singing in the senior choir. In 2019, Marilyn moved to Legends Retirement Home where she remained active, enjoying exercise classes and playing bingo, but found the most joy following the adventures of her children.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Sr.; her parents: James Eldred and Mae Pate; and brother, Jim Pate. She is survived by her sister, Carol Ann (Joe) Friend; three children: Joe (Nancy Evans) Hazel Jr., Jim (Wendy) Hazel, and Jon (Julie) Hazel; and four grandchildren: Peyton, Mason, Lauren, and Jacqui Hazel. Marilyn was unforgettable and will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at 2p.m., November 12, 2022, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6767 S Mingo Rd, Tulsa, OK 74133, with a celebration of life to follow at Cedar Ridge Country Club. Donations can be made to the Joe Hazel Memorial Student Award at Louisiana State University (visit lsufoundation.org/give or mail a check payable to LSU Foundation, 3796 Nicholson Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70802) or the Asbury United Methodist Church. https://www.fitzgeraldfuneralservice.com/

Marilyn was a strong woman just like many from that generation. Nothing got her down or got the best of her. She told it like it was. We spent numerous Thanksgivings with her at Jon and Julie´s and will miss not being able to experience that again. We told the same stories over each time and laughed just as much as we did the first time we told them. Condolences to the entire family.
