Mattie Price Stevens Newton Shelton

Mattie Price Stevens Newton Shelton, 99, of Stafford, passed away on Sunday, November 13, 2022 at her home.

A lifelong resident of Stafford County, Mattie Price was born on a snowy night on February 1, 1923, at historic "Hickory Hill" to parents Joseph and Laurietta Stevens. When she was only seven years old, her father passed away and then at age 12, she and her mother moved to Locust Grove Farm. Years later, she married Benjamin Newton and they had four children at Locust Grove. Mattie Price always referred to Locust Grove Farm as "home." Years after the death of her mother, the family moved to a new home built on land left to Benjamin by his father, Captain B. Years after Benjamin passed, Mattie Price married John Douglas Shelton.

Mattie Price never shied away from hard work or an opportunity to be with family or friends. She was truly a people person. She was also well known for her knowledge of family ancestry and enjoyed sharing it with all. She was a member of the former Calvary Baptist Church. Mattie Price was also a proud member of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe and she was one of the few remaining real granddaughters of The Daughters of the Confederacy. She retired from Morganstern Pants Factory and enjoyed cooking for her family, gardening, and sewing.

Survivors include her children, Dwight Newton (Christine), Christine Fines (Medford), and Wayne Newton (Sondra); grandchildren, Eva Shelton, Elaine Simon, Brian Selph, Roger Fines, Christopher Fines, Mathew Fines, Angela MacCord, and David Newton; 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Benjamin Newton; second husband John Douglas Shelton; and daughter, Brenda Selph.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the hospice team plus Dr. McManus and his staff.

A service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
