Sally Fitzhugh Obituary

Sally Lou Fitzhugh

91-year old Stafford schoolteacher, Sally Lou Fitzhugh, passed from causes incident to stroke on November 28, 2022.

Sally Lou was born on January 16, 1931, on Poplar Grove Farm in Stafford, where her family has lived since the 1820s. She was the youngest daughter of Lee and Sallie Fitzhugh, attended school in Stafford, and graduated Falmouth High School in 1948. She received her teaching certificate from Radford College in 1952 and Master of Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1966. Sally Lou is perhaps best known for the thirty-two years (1956-1988) she taught accounting, business, and typing to thousands of Stafford young people.

When not teaching, Sally Lou grew garden vegetables, burned biscuits, bred Siamese cats, and watched PBS. She loved to travel, visiting all 50 states and most countries. She celebrated the year 2000 with a luxury trip around the world visiting every continent except Antartica.

Sally was proud of her heritage and was an active member and organizing regent of the Overwharton Parish Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also active in many other genealogical societies including the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of 1812, and Colonial Dames. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority. She was president of the Falmouth High School alumni association and enjoyed attending reunions with her cousin Nancy French Cox. She was also a member of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe and participated in Stafford's 350th anniversary celebration with tribal members. She participated in international Fitzhugh family reunions in England, Ireland, and Fredericksburg, and she was interviewed for Stafford's oral history project. Sally Lou attended historic Aquia Episcopal Church.

Sally has joined her brother, John French Fitzhugh (Mae Worthington); sister, Virginia Lee Fitzhugh Moore (Wilburn Davis Moore Sr.); and brother, Lee B. Fitzhugh Jr., who beat her Home. She is survived by nephew, Wilburn Davis Moore Jr. (Carol Anne Monk Moore), two great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great-great nephew, and four great-great nieces, who miss her dearly.

Sally was my teacher at North Stafford high school. I enjoyed hearing her stories from her farm. Looks like I was her student the very last year she reached, (88). I've wondered about how she was doing all these years. I'm sorry to hear of her passing but glad to hear that it sounds like she had a nice long enjoyable life.

She was my business teacher in the late 60s. Enjoyed her classes very much. Was hired by the govt after graduation because of the skills she taught me where I stayed for 40 years. Thank you Ms Fitzhugh, RIP.

We would like to share our thoughts and prayers with the family for their loss. Ms. Fitzhugh was my wife, Kim {Hodge}, typing teacher in 1973/1974, and I am a tribal member of the Patawomeck. May you find peace in the memories you enjoyed.

On one of my visits with Aunt Sally Lou, I brought my Parchesi board and we played a game. Other visits were to just sit and talk with her. I was fascinated at how she travelled so much, and many times went by herself, until she met up with a group. I wish I had visited more with her more. What an amazing lady.
