Dr. Robert Roger Harry, 75, of Fredericksburg died Monday, December 26, 2022 at his residence.

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, he was the son of Benjamin Donald Harry and Hansel Guest Harry. He attended Mecklenburg County public schools. In his senior year at North Mecklenburg High School he was co-captain of the football, wrestling, and track teams. Summers he enjoyed water skiing, swimming and boating on Lake Norman where, under the supervision of his father, he and his brothers built their family vacation house. At NC State he was on the wrestling team and earned a degree in Chemistry. Dr. Harry graduated from the University of North Carolina with a MD-PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Mathematics. After completing a six year residency in General Surgery at the University of Virginia he accepted a position with Drs. Richmond Low, William Hollister, and William Sasser in Fredericksburg.

From 1979-2004 Dr. Harry practiced General and Vascular Surgery at Mary Washington Hospital. He served as president of both the Virginia Surgical Society and the Virginia Vascular Society. Following retirement from surgery, for ten years he used his professional skills to teach nursing students at Germanna Community College critical thinking in the virtual nursing laboratory. In that same time period, he chaired the newly formed Physician Quality Management Committee at Mary Washington Hospital.

Dr. Harry was an avid reader, talented cabinetmaker, and lifelong golfer. Playing new courses with family members and friends was a special pleasure. He was a member of the Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Harry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ann Earnhardt Harry. Also surviving are his sister, Donna Harry Cochrane and her husband, James, of Atlanta, Georgia; his brother Benjamin Brooks Harry and his wife, Jan, of Austin, Texas; and his brother George Guest Harry and his wife, Gina, of Cary North Carolina. He had close relationships with his brothers-in-law Edward Lee Earnhardt and his wife, Elizabeth, of Winchester, Virginia; and Eric Michael Earnhardt and his wife, Cathleen, of Morristown, New Jersey. Dr. Harry treasured his nieces and nephews Dr. Thos Cochrane, Jama Cochrane, Brian Harry, Paige Harry, Katharine Deveise, Emily Tweddell, Lauren Ryan, Anna Harry, Sara Mansfield, Jonathan Earnhardt, Eric Earnhardt, Dr. Jenna Earnhardt, and Dr. Mary Cate Earnhardt. His godson Peter Elstner and goddaughter Margaret Clary Goldman enriched his life immensely.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
