Richard Ross Obituary

Richard Ross

Richard Ross, 66, long time area resident, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Though his death has been a shock to his loved ones as his illness was brief, it has brought them comfort to know that he has rejoined his wife, Martha, in Heaven who passed just 10 months prior.

Richard grew up in the area and graduated from Spotsylvania High School. He excelled in varsity football and baseball, where his batting average record of .520 held for nearly 20 years. Also, during his time there, he became known as the "VICA King" for his extraordinary skills in his vocational specialty classes which helped propel him into a career working at Verizon. Through his hard work and abilities, he rose through the ranks at Verizon from "telephone man" up to Operations Manager and retired from the company following a career spanning 38 years of service. After his retirement from Verizon, he also co-owned a successful small business, Poppa Bear's Kettle Korn, which brought him and his family many fun adventures from 2013 to 2019. Later, never being known as one to sit idly, Richard joined Total Communications Management (TCM) to offer his services in the telecommunications consulting arena until his illness forced him to retire.

All who knew Richard can attest that he was an avid sportsman. He had a deep passion for waterfowl hunting and was actively involved in both the Fredericksburg area Ducks Unlimited Chapter as well as the state organization. He was well known to many in the area and around the state as part of "The Ross Brothers" waterfowl hunting outfit. His wing shooting passion took him to Canada and Argentina. Richard loved any type of hunting or fishing but, most of all, loved experiencing the outdoors with his loved ones. Those fortunate enough to have shared a blind with him were witness to his nature of being a practical joker and ensuring those in the blind were always well fed. He lived every day to the fullest.

Richard was a devoted husband and primary caregiver to his wife of 40 years, Martha, during her courageous battle with cancer. Richard was a loving father, son, brother, friend, and cohort. He always made sure those around him were enjoying themselves and did not go hungry. He was fierce, loyal, and passionate about his love for others.

He is survived by his daughters, Sarah (Tommy) and Amy; mother Frances; siblings Danny (Sherry), Terry (Bill), and Ronny (Robyn); sister-in-law Debbie; grandchildren Marshall and Henry; and many nieces and nephews.

He joins forever in Heaven his recently passed wife, Martha; father Julius; and brother Brian.

Celebration of Life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 5, 2023 at the Fredericksburg Rod & Gun Club.

My deepest sympathy, condolences and prayers are with Richard's family. We go back to being classmates in high school and when his family owned their television repair services.

So sorry to hear of Ricky's passing. May God comfort and bless the family. I remember the good times of competing against the Ross brothers in little league baseball and our times at youth group at Salem baptist..

I am so sorry to hear of Rick's passing. Met him in school many years ago. Played some baseball and softball with him. A good guy!
