I was Fred's PhD Candidate in the late 60s. He was a character - brilliant, empathetic, somewhat chaotic, lovable, always engaging. He always insisted that we defend our interpretations with almost legal rigor. Sloppiness of thought was intolerable. He was kindly and supportive. He was a good man and I will miss him.
