Judy Leaver, 76, of Silver Spring, MD died September 11th, 2023, in the village of Cirencester, England. She was on the last day of a three-week trip of hiking, visiting friends, sight-seeing and exploring her favorite parts of the UK. Judy was born in West Plains, Missouri on February 20th, 1947 to Otho Amil & Margaret Alice (Piper) Jones. She grew up in nearby Springfield and graduated from Jefferson City high school, the University of Missouri (BSW) and the University of Tulsa (MA).
Judy is preceded in death by her younger sister, Linda, and survived by her two sons, Chris and Kevin and Kevin's wife Sheila, three grandchildren, a niece and two nephews.
She lived in Tulsa, OK for 20 years and moved to Washington, D.C. in 1993. She loved being a Washingtonian and lived in the D.C. area for the rest of her life. Judy was a social worker, counselor, non-profit executive and freelance writer. She filled her free time and retirement with travel, writing, hiking, movies, concerts and exploring her favorite neighborhoods. Judy was an active member and leader at All Souls Church Unitarian in Washington, where her commitment to social justice was cultivated and her love of community flourished.
A gathering of friends and family will take place on Monday, November 20th, at John Knox Presbyterian Church in Tulsa in the style of a picnic - one of Judy's favorite ways to connect with those she loved the most. There will be a celebration of life at All Souls Church in Washington next spring. The family requests no flowers or donations. Instead, take a trip! More experiences, fewer things. I grew up in John Knox Church and knew Judy from there. I was thinking she was employed with Family and Children´s´ Services in Tulsa for several years. Sounds like it was very sudden. I am so sorry. She was beautiful and sweet. I hate to miss the picnic, but I will be in Dallas, TX. Blessings to the family.
