GREENSBORO — Mrs. Marsha Lee Hooks passed away after a long fight with pancreatic cancer on May 8th, 2009 at Saint Vincent's Hospital in New York City.
A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 16th at Community in Christ Presbyterian Church in Greensboro.
Marsha was born in Lafayette, Indiana during WWII. Her father, Fred Theodore Hamner was a WWII bomber pilot. After the war, the Hamner family lived in Elloree, S.C., Fort Lauderdale, FL, Sacramento, CA and Harbor City, CA.
Marsha and Jim have lived in the Forest Oaks community for the past 40 years and are founding members of Community In Christ Presbyterian Church. Marsha served the church in many ways as an Elder, Sunday school teacher, choir member, Meals on Wheels volunteer, Girl Scout leader and many committees. Marsha was also active in Orange Presbytery, serving on the Ministry committee helping churches through transition periods and the New Church Development, committed helping new churches get established.
Marsha enjoyed family gatherings at her home and at various vacation locations, especially Kerr Lake. She also enjoyed playing bridge with her friends in Forest Oaks. She gave tirelessly of her time and love to her family and friends. She was the primary caregiver for her grandparents and parents for many years. Her compassion and selflessness will be missed greatly.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, James Calvin Hooks; mother, Betty Lee Hamner of Greensboro; daughter, Jennifer Lee Toole and husband James Shannon Toole and grandchildren, James Gideon Toole, Mary Katherine Toole and Hayden Elizabeth Toole of Columbia, MD; daughter, Katherine Ann Parker and husband Joseph Robert Parker and grandson Joseph Owen Parker of Hillsborough; brothers, Stephen Mathews Hamner and Fred Theodore Hamner, Jr. of Greensboro; and sister, Bette Lee Thornberg of Cape Coral, FL.
The family will receive friends following the service with a reception in the church fellowship area.

It seems like only yesterday Marsha and I would trail behind our children through Forest Oaks on Halloween, enjoy a cup of coffee and a laugh...she was so special to me, a dear friend,and I have and will miss her......Love to you Jim, Jennifer, and Katherine and all of your family...
