Jean Plunkett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 4 to Jun. 5, 2009.
Jean Elizabeth Plunkett April 16, 1916 to June 2, 2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and sister. Jean's strong faith in her Saviour enabled her to confidently say, When my time comes, I'm ready. Jean passed away at Circle Drive Special Care Home with her family by her side. Jean was born at her picturesque home in Carnlough, Northern Ireland. Jean is lovingly remembered by her son, Garth (Barbara) Plunkett; and daughter, Elaine (Barrie) Dubray; grandchildren, Erin Plunkett, Jason, Michelle and Craig Dubray; sister, Elma Craig in Ireland; sisters-in-law, Doris Chaplin and Ada Caswell; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Delbert (1985); her parents, Joseph and Jane Craig; sisters, Isabella Peace Craig, Evelyn Melville; brothers, Robert, James, Jack and Joseph Craig; sisters-in-law, Hettie and Ellen Craig, Jean Bowditch, Margie Plunkett; brothers-inlaw, William Melville, William and Leo Plunkett, Chester Caswell, Walter Bowditch and Frank Chaplin. As a young girl she attended school in Carnlough, Northern Ireland. She later worked with her brothers Jim and Jack at Birks Department store in Belfast. During WWII she met a young Canadian soldier, Del Plunkett. They married on May 6, 1944. Jean travelled with other war brides by ship to Canada where she lived with her in-laws until Del returned home a year later. Following a brief stay in Saskatoon, they resided in Valley Centre, Bickleigh, Druid, Plenty and Colonsay. Jean's children grew up in Plenty where she was very involved in her church and community activities developing lifelong friendships. Her home was always filled with the smell of delicious baking. She had the gift of hospitality and enjoyed having friends for meals and coffee. Del and Jean retired to Saskatoon where they enjoyed many activities at Bethel United Church and the Rebekah Lodge. After Del's passing, Jean resided at Legion Manor for over 20 years where she again developed many special friendships. During these years, her grandchildren brought her much joy. One of their treasured memories is when she recently told them, I love you so much I love all of you. After celebrating her 90th birthday, Jean moved to Sunshine Haven. The family is deeply grateful to Marlene Klassen and her staff (Minnie, Eileen, Elaine and Cathy) for the amazing love and care they showed to her. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Drs. Merryweather and O'Hashi, the staff at St. Paul's Hospital, Sunnyside Nursing Home and Circle Drive Special Care Home for the loving care they gave to Jean, particularly during her last days with us. A special thank you to Hope Tonder for the love and comfort she provided. Donations in Jean's memory may be made to Bethel United Church or Circle Drive Special Care Home. Following a private burial service at Floral, a Memorial Service to celebrate Jean's life will be held on Saturday, June 6th at 1:00 p.m. from Circle Drive Alliance Church Chapel of the Prairies (3035 Preston Ave. South). Arrangements in care of Kurtis Rae MOURNING GLORY FUNERAL SERVICES (978-5200).

Dear Elaine & Garth, We were very sorry to learn of your mom's death. Although we have lost touch over the years, we have many memories of our times together in Druid. Thinking of Jean reminds us of our mom and yours having tea together on summer afternoons. They were good friends. We are thinking of you at this time.
