Tuesday, December 1, is Giving Tuesday, a day when we’re asked to step back from the shopping that dominates the days after Thanksgiving and do some good with our dollars. You might have a favorite charity to support on Giving Tuesday – or maybe you’re donating to a loved one’s favorite charity in their memory.
But if you want to make a difference this Giving Tuesday and you’re not sure how, perhaps you’ll consider a charity that’s special to Legacy: the Funeral Service Foundation. Their mission: to “invest in people and programs that strengthen funeral service and lift up grieving communities.”
COVID-19 has dramatically impacted families and funeral directors everywhere, who must struggle to safely honor loved ones and manage grief during a pandemic. (Legacy has collected numerous stories of how funeral professionals have worked hard to serve their communities as “last responders” throughout this difficult time.) To help, the Funeral Service Foundation created a free COVID-19 grief guide for funeral directors to share with families. Grants from their COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund support grief organizations like First Hour Grief Response and telehealth providers Cornerstone of Hope. The foundation also offers funeral directors emergency PPE supplies and volunteer assistance in COVID hotspots.
Funeral homes and the people who work for them are central to the work we do at Legacy. Now more than ever, they’re the most important allies a grieving family has. If you’ve ever suffered a loss and appreciated the calm, steady support of funeral professionals, we hope you’ll support the Funeral Service Foundation as they work to give others that same support while they grieve.
