Gene Walter Mulvihill

AGE: 78 • New Vernon

Gene Walter Mulvihill, 78, of New Vernon, New Jersey passed away on Saturday, October 27 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Gail, six children and 16 grandchildren.

Mr. Mulvihill was a pioneer in the mutual fund industry and a venture capitalist and financier with a distinguished career spanning many industries including cellular broadcast, cancer drugs, robotics, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), amusement park rides, ranching and real estate development. He was well-known for his long affiliation with Vernon Valley Great Gorge Ski Area and Action Park and, more recently, with his role at Mountain Creek and Crystal Springs Resorts. In support of his resort and hotel interests, Mr. Mulvihill assembled a celebrated wine cellar, La Tour, which received a Grand Award by Wine Spectator.

Upon learning of Mr. Mulvihill's passing, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie commented "Gene Mulvihill's contributions to the economic development of Sussex County are unquestionable. His unique vision and entrepreneurial spirit will be greatly missed."

Mr. Mulvihill grew up in West Orange, New Jersey and graduated from West Orange High School and Lehigh University. He served in the U.S. Marines Corps 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division and earned a rank of Captain.

A visitation will be held at the Church of Christ the King's Parish Hall from 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm on Friday, November 2. A funeral mass will be held at the Church of Christ the King on Saturday at 10:00 am. Doyle Funeral Home of Morristown (www.doylefh.com) is preparing the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gene's memory may be made to Catholic Charities at www.catholiccharities.org or 800-494-3292.

Dear Mulvihill family,
I will miss your father. what a great man. I just loved everything about him. Huge heart, great listener, practiced charity, wonderful laugh and sense of humor, and gave everyone a chance and another chance if they needed it. I and my family are so saddened by this news...I thought he would live forever. I thought he was another John Wayne but with more humor. My prayers and hugs go out to all of you. I will miss him greatly and he left a huge impact on me. I am very sad to hear this news but know God is enjoying his company, Love, Victoria

Dear Mrs. Mulvihill, Splinter, Pete, Julie, Andy, Jimmy and Topher,
I am so sad to hear about the passing of Mr. Mulvihill. While I didn't have too many personal encounters with him, I do know he had a profound impact on six wonderful children, 3 of which were my high school buddies.
I do have a couple of very fond memories of Mr. Mulvihill. One is the encouragement & lack of criticism Julie and I got for our summer painting business which pretty much consisted of painting a few of his outdoor buildings (pretty hard to mess up on!) And the other was the super fun and warm welcome I got in Snowmass one spring break when I was just learning to ski.
Your husband and father touched so many thousands of peoples' lives and created enough joyful memories to keep us all smiling for the rest of our lives! Take good care and let those great memories fill the void you feel today.
Much love,
Gina

Dear Gail and Family,
I just learned of Gene's passing an hour ago from Maureen as I called her to verify an address for a Thanksgiving Day card I was about to send him. I'm weeping and in shock at hearing this sad news. I loved Gene like a brother. We've been life long friends since our Lehigh days. They don't make men like Gene these days. He had a great heart, a great spirit, a great love of life and was a kind, generous and compassionate man beyond compare. He has affected so many lives for the good. He supported our efforts in the jails and prisons of America faithfully and without reservation or hesitation. His support undergirded the ministry. I miss him beyond measure. Heaven just received a huge blessing. I will join him in God's timing. My utmost sympathy to you Gail, your five sons and daughter and the grandchildren. You all are in my prayers at this time.

Gene...... WOW!! Most know that it's exceedingly rare that one person can - clearly and inarguably - have such profound impact on thousands of individual people and also on much larger communities. Bigger than life? That truly was Gene. His brilliance and charisma gave him the ability to dramatically influence me and so many others, but his commitment and energy are what made his impact so remarkable and far-flung.

Since learning of Gene's passing it's been very difficult to escape daily thoughts and memories about him and his family. My hope is that Gene's huge extended family in Sussex County - particularly - but also around the planet all take a moment to reflect on Gene's positive impacts and thank God that they had the chance to know him or learn from him and/or benefit from any of his many works. I also pray that his immediate family is at peace. In so many ways having a father or husband (Uncle? Cousin? Brother?) with the persona of Gene must have been amazing.

God bless his family and give us the wisdom to reflect on the many unique and wonderful contributions that Gene brought to our lives!!!

Dear Gail and family,
Gene Mulvihill was a visionary who never stopped dreaming. He was a pedestrian who understood the concerns and values of others regardles of color creed or class. He was a class act who knew how to laugh at himself and joked to make others laugh. It was a pleasure to work for him and with him to make the world and the Highlands little bit greener. He will be missed.

Best wishes,
