Whiting, Kenneth R.
Well known oilman, Kenneth R. Whiting, died peacefully at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona, on March 18, 2014, at age 86. Ken was the founder of Whiting Petroleum Corp in 1980, and continued until recently as Director. He was President and Chief Executive of the company from 1980 to 1993 when he was appointed Vice-President of international business for IES Diversified, the former parent company's predecessor. From 1978 to later 1979, he served as President of Webb Resources, Inc. Ken had years of experience in the oil and natural gas industry, including positions as Executive Vice-President and Director of Ladd Petroleum Corp. Before embarking in the oil business, Ken was a partner in the law firm of Holme, Roberts and Owen in Denver. For many years, Ken was a Director of United Banks of Colorado, Inc., a Director of the Independent Petroleum Association of America, and a Director of the Independent Petroleum Association of Mountain States. A devotee of classical music, Ken was a life trustee of the Aspen Music Festival, and a former trustee of the Denver Symphony and Colorado Opera. He served for many years as a trustee of the University of Denver. Ken received his bachelors degree in business from the University of Colorado, and his J.D., cum laud, from the University of Denver. He was a member of the Denver Club, the Denver Petroleum Club, Cherry Hills Country Club, and the Denver Country Club. Ken was born in Windsor, Colorado, but raised in Wyoming. He is survived by his wife Kay, two sons, Kenneth Jr. and Thomas, daughter Kathy Overskei, step-daughter Keevie Silvay, a sister Janie, and 8 grandchildren. Ken requested that no services be held. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests contribution to the Aspen Music Festival.
