Margie Sayles Callis, born on January 4, 1929, in Edna, Texas, passed away peacefully at home in Houston, Texas on Saturday, November 14, 2020.

She is predeceased by her parents, Rayfel Sayles, Sr. (Buster Brown) and Layden Robinson Sayles; her husband, Sammy Callis; her son, Cpl. Tony Ray Turner; her daughter, Linda Turner Woodard; her sister, Vera Joshua; and her brothers, Jessie Ray Sayles and Rayfel Sayles, Jr.

Margie had her first job at 13 years old, where she earned $1.25 per week.  From those earnings, she was able to buy Juneteenth outfits for herself and her younger sister. Whether she was working as a babysitter, a theater ticket agent or a waitress at the local café, she served up a warm smile and a savviness well beyond her years.

Her kids and her family meant the world to her.  Her second marriage was to Sammie Callis on February 6, 1958.  He won her over by being such a good man who accepted her and her three children.  She settled into living a Christ-centered life and got certified to work as a home health care aide.

Rarely idle, Margie was always there for those in need.  She was an excellent cook who grew her own vegetables and picked her own dewberries to make her homemade dewberry pie with homemade lattice crust.  Her family could always count on her to be a shining example of love and benevolence.

In 1991, she retired from the home health care industry. Margie was the quintessential matriarch and homemaker and could always turn nothing into something.   She tended to her roses and Philodendrons and did not hesitate to hop on the riding lawn mower to mow the lawn, climb on the roof to make a house repair or tinker under the hood of the car.

Margie leaves a lifetime of precious and loving memories to her daughter, Wanda Turner Ballard; granddaughter, ChariesseTurner; granddaughter, Chondra Wilson; grandson, Andre’ Turner; nieces, LaVinua Washington and Janny Joshua; nephew, Danny Joshua; three great-granddaughers; three great-great granddaughters and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at Richardson Mortuary, 3201 Brookfield Drive; Houston, Texas 77045. Viewing from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. and Service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Bro. James Evans, Officiating. Interment Washington Cemetery, Edna, Texas.
