ALEXIS ANDERSON Obituary

ANDERSON, Alexis J. of Newton and West Tisbury, age 68, died on September 20, 2019, of cancer. Alexis leaves her husband, Alexander A. Notopoulos, Jr., and their two daughters, Andrea and Margaret Notopoulos. She was the daughter of the late Wesley E. Anderson and Jane W. Anderson, formerly of Centerville, DE. Alexis was an Associate Clinical Professor Emerita at Boston College Law School, where, prior to her retirement in June, 2019, her academic work included serving as a clinical supervisor and, for five years, Director at the Boston College Legal Services LAB. She also taught first year experiential courses and courses on professional responsibility and legal history. Her clinical teaching included courses in law school and university programs in London, Paris, Beijing and Tashkent, and she authored numerous publications and presentations, principally in the field of clinical legal education. Apart from her teaching and family, a portrait of Alexis must include her passion for the pursuit of social justice, her love of political dialogue and the pleasures she took from baking, reading and visiting her home on Martha's Vineyard. She was a longtime member of the Newton Ward 7 Democratic Committee. The time and place of a Celebration of Alexis's Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Boston College Law School for the benefit of the Boston College Legal Services LAB, BC Law Advancement Office, Cadigan Alumni Center, 2121 Commonwealth Avenue, Brighton, MA 02135, or at www.bc.edu/givelaw selecting "Other" and designating Law-BC Legal Services LAB under "I wish to make my gift to". I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Alexis's passing. She was a childhood friend and neighbor who lived just across the street from us in Wilmington, Delaware. We spent many hours happily playing and growing up together. I last saw her at a memorial service for her mother in Delaware many years ago.

I will keep her and her family in my thoughts and prayers. Wishing you God's peace....Jane Woodall Verbanc

Alexis's family is in my thoughts and prayers. I was very sorry to hear that Alexis passed away. I was a research assistant for her a few summers ago. She was a very encouraging, kind, supportive and thoughtful mentor. She even brought me a present from her trip to China that summer. I appreciated her extensive legal knowledge and warm personality. I will keep the Andersons in my prayers.

My heart goes out to Alexander, Andrea, and Maggie. I have such fond memories of Andrea and Maggie in my classes at Underwood, and of all the support Alexis gave to her girls, their classroom teacher, and the school at large. I have a particular memory of the time she made it possible for my daughter, who was visiting from Seattle to contribute to the Underwood Fair and surprise me with a gift at the same time.
I am so sorry for your loss.

I am so sad to learn that Professor Anderson has passed away, and no doubt endured a great deal of suffering as well. She was one of my 1L professors - a real beacon of light and clarity during a time that so many of us were trying to find our way at the very beginning of our legal careers. She was absolutely lovely. I offer my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. I can only imagine the enormity of your loss. Know that her legacy spreads far and wide.

Although I didn't know Alexis, as a spokeswoman from the Brandywine high school class of 1969, I offer our deep and sincere condolences to her family.

What a great teacher! Such a privilege to be her student. Thank you, members of Professor Anderson's family, for sharing her with the BCLS community. She trained many many lawyers in the humane practice of law. Her students learned what she always knew: that the law exists to serve the needs of real people and that lawyers have myriad opportunities to serve. She was my first supervisor and I loved her, as did many BCLS students. Her reach extended across the globe. Alexis helped create a legal services organization to help law students serve the needs of the people in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and she is beloved by the students she touched there as well. It is a rich legacy of kindness, excellence and justice that Professor Alexis Anderson leaves us with, a great role model. Thank you.
