Ronald L. Richer

Age: 71 • Colchester

Ron died peacefully on April 18 at home after living with multiple myeloma for almost seven years. His positive attitude as he faced each new chemotherapy regimen and invasive therapy with a deep inner strength inspired us all. He was born September 19, 1945, in Burlington, the son of Emilien ("Joe") and Mildred Richer. Ron graduated from South Burlington High School in 1964. He and Mary (Carlson) were married on September 2, 1967. Their love story began in the spring of 1963 when they were juniors in high school and they were looking forward to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this September. His long career in law enforcement included the Essex Junction and South Burlington Police Departments, Auxiliary State Police, Chittenden County Sheriffs Department, the Vermont Police Academy (instructor) and the State of Vermont Motor Vehicle Department. He was proud to have served his country as a member of the Vermont Air National Guard and retired after almost 26 years with the rank of Senior Master Sergeant. After his retirement he worked part-time for the Champlain Valley Exposition and enjoyed spending time in his woodshop. He was so proud when people walking by our house stopped and commented on our "golf course" lawn. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife Mary, his sons Chuck and his partner Lynn Bessett of Castle Rock, Colorado and Jeff and his wife Sadie of West Berlin. His two grandchildren, Cecelia and Lucas, were Grampa's pride and joy. His "Grampa Blanket" kept him warm in his recliner at home, at his chemo appointments, in the hospital and while he was at Burlington Health and Rehab. He is also survived by his mother, his brother Len and his wife Marilyn, his brothers-in-law Paul Carlson and Butch Carlson and his wife Deb, his sisters-in-law Lori (Carlson) Arango and her husband Bill and Sandy Marcotte. He leaves aunts, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father, his father and mother-in-law Charles and Joyce Carlson, his brother-in-law Kris Carlson and two nephews.

We would like to thank his extraordinary medical team of Dr. Dennis Sanders, Amy Fox, Stephanie Pevear, Margaret, Judy and Tammy and the staff of Champlain Valley Hematology and Oncology for their love and support during this journey. His stay at Burlington Health and Rehab was short, but he received an abundance of kindness and wonderful attentive care from the 2nd floor staff, including the physical and occupational therapists. The VNA Hospice nurses were the angels who helped him remain at home the last week.

A celebration of his life will be held at Mary's church, First Congregational Church, 39 Main Street, Essex Junction on Saturday, April 22nd, at 3 p.m. with a short reception to follow. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

If you would like to honor him, please consider making a donation in his memory to the McClure-Miller Respite House, 3113 Roosevelt Highway, Route 7, Colchester, VT 05446. Ready Funeral Home, 68 Pinecrest Drive, Essex Jct. is in charge of arrangements. To send online condolences, please visit
