a way of life worth living*
(in memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 1933-2020)
by Ruth Esther Gilmore

wondering i stand at the feet
of the statue of liberty
pondering define liberty today?

a symbol a crown a torch
radiating a human-made glow dedicated
to friendship between america and france

or more importantly
a way of life made for our children and grandchildren regardless of their color

a way of life to emulate in face of hardships
with nothing but courage in the heart
with nothing but hope in the eyes?

pulitzer helped patriots
relate to three hundred fifty pieces
of liberty and freedom

their determination and their energy
orchestratedall happenings
and the creation of new dreams
and of filling these dreams with new goals and actions
shining from america to the old world

depicting aptitude and audacity
to triumph over the brutal nature of life on land
or sea to overcome inequality

under society’s broken window
arms and hands with muscled courage are raised
united with those workers

who hammered the copper plates
of the statue of liberty once a stranger
planned and built on foreign soil
erected on an island of liberty and freedom

and here beneath her moving feet
i turn into a pillar of salt
knowing that no women
nor native americans
nor black americans
nor asian americans
nor hispanic americans

– no not even pulitzer himself –
were allowed to attend the unveiling of the lady
our statue of liberty

wondering i go

wandering i go with the urge
to insert the meaning of liberty
into a cascade of promises and opportunities

for peace, justice,
and liberty are everyone’s birthrights

Many years ago while working with a D.C. tax attorney, I had the pleasure and the honor of meeting Ruth Ginsburg. She was gracious, kind and had a terrific sense of humor. She was so down to earth and I was able to chat with her in the law office I worked in. She told me some stories about her childhood and, since I am of the Jewish faith, she shared some stories of the Jewish holidays from years before. It was truly an honor and a privilege to have known her. I feel in my heart that she is now with her wonderful husband, and they are most likely holding hands. It does not surprise me how much her belated husband adored her. She adored him as well. She was a force to be reckoned with in all of her years in the legal profession. She will forever be remembered for her amazing life, her brilliant mind, and her long tenure as a Supreme Court Justice. You go, Ruthie! Rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to the lovely family of this most amazing trailblazer! Shalom!

Hashkavoth Aviator of Justice

In blue, grey, and white
Aviators once saw the world,
Piercing through clouds.
Dressed in black robes,
In blue, white and red
The aviator of justice
Through a now wired world
Took off.
Paths new she carved
Our time's trailblazer
Bridging action with black-letter laws
So all people could march trough together
Her plane was dialogue
Her mind on white page flying high
To the scrutiny of a candid world
For colleagues, steel magnolia- delicate but with an iron rod
Embroider her resting Robes,
In colours of Liberty, Equality and Justice for all
Red- sweet as pomegranate
Blue in the shade of tekheilet
And white, as the Sienna marble columns in the Temple of Justice
Beautiful Dreamer Ruth,
Liberator of Women and Men,
Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone
When will the cloud of sorrow depart
If you awaken are no more?
Leave forever behind (in our souls)
All traces of your journey
