Doris S. Hancock, 89, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2018. She was a lifelong resident of Newport News. Doris was a graduate of Newport News High School. She also attended James Madison University, where she was a member of the Tri Sigma Sorority and received a degree in elementary education. She was a long-time employee of Mary Perkins Apparel and Gift Shop. Doris was a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, where she served in the Women's Circle. In her early years she enjoyed playing bridge, water skiing, and crafting. She was also an avid camper and sports fan. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Harvey Ray Sherman and Marie Cawley Sherman and husband Robert Berkley Hancock, Jr. of 60 years. Survivors include her daughter, Robin H Bateman; son, Berk Hancock; grandchildren, Christopher Hancock and his wife, Heather, Lindsey B. Nichol and husband, Kevin, and Jason Hancock; great grandchildren, Taylor, Kaleb, Blake and Chase. Doris is also survived by her beloved dog, Holly. Her greatest love was her family who she was so very proud of. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Elois Massenburg for her compassionate care to Doris. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, at Peninsula Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, 414 Hiden Blvd., Newport News, VA 23606. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
