Max Gruenberg Obituary

Born in San Francisco, California, the excitement to come to Alaska started at age 10. At Boy Scout camp, as the new flag with Alaska's star rose up the pole, Max imagined taking the best laws from across the country to make Alaska the best state in the union. He first came to Alaska while in law school to write the Alaskan Law Review. It was love at first visit. Max served for many years on a national committee to select the best new laws that are distributed to every state legislator.

In 1991, Max met the love of his life, Kayla Epstein, while she was giving the invocation on behalf of the Juneau Jewish Community in the House Chambers while he was House Majority Leader. They were married on June 5, 1994.

Max had two puppets, Grover and Booger-Baby (who lived in the land behind the dresser) he used to entertain his children and grandchildren and occasionally brought them into their classrooms. The puppets argued so much that the children would find themselves acting as mediators.

Max knew the custodians and mentored waiters serving him lunch. He was consistently late because he was focused on the moment. He told corny jokes, but also off-the-cuff zingers, which would break up the entire House of Representatives. His honesty, gentleness, intelligence, love for people and what he did, were legendary. He had a big heart, but it gave out on Valentine's Day.

He is survived by Kayla Epstein (wife), Bruce (son), Sionnon (daughter-in-law), Beccan and Delilah (grandchildren), Daniel (son), Raoul Gruenberg, Marcella Wilbur, Claudio Schnier, Rebecca Schnier (siblings), Terry Lilienthal (aunt), Samantha, Brynn, Corinne, Margot (nieces), Hope (great niece), These are facts Max wanted people to know about himself.

Dear Kayla and family, Wendy and I send our love and condolences. At last October's 50th Reunion, we missed the El Campo reunion due to commitment to attend the football game with classmates. But we did see you at the 45th or was it the 40th? In any case, I have fond memories of knowing Max and his easy friendly personality while we were in El Campo.
Hugs from Boston...

Politics can be a noisy, confusing and nasty business. Max G. proved it is possible to make a substantial contribution to his state through devoted and correct efforts. He was one of the people who made a serious and lasting contribution to make Alaska what it is today and deserves a generous and sincere thank you for his efforts.

Kayla and Bruce,
I am truly saddened to hear of the passing of such a wonderful man, husband and father. It is never an easy pill to swallow losing someone so dear to you but we can find comfort knowing that Jesus can do what he did for his friend Lazarus for max and you can one day be with him again right here on earth. Thoughts and prayers with you and your family.(John 11 43-44)

I was saddened to learn of Max's passing. I met with him several times as a legislator when I was serving as a member of the Violent Crimes Compensation Board. He was always well prepared for our meetings and was very active in working with the board. He was a true gentleman

I met Max in 1970 when my husband, also a law student at UCLA, joined the UCLA-Alaska Law Review, which Max founded. Over the years, I have visited with Max both in Anchorage and Juneau. His intellect, his warmth, his devotion to his law practice, and his service in the State Legislature are to be commended and appreciated, for Max gave his all to every endeavor he undertook. He left us too soon. I send sympathy and love to his family. Max will live on in our hearts and in his good deeds.
