JOHN NUGENT Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Mar. 18, 2014.
John Cullen Nugent
1921-2014
John Cullen Nugent left this life on March 12, 2014. Looking to the future and what he left with us is a past so rich in creation. Artistically, John's work forged his strong personal convictions with a desire to communicate in his own unique way. His work was his refuge and he cast himself in all that he had pursued. John was a devoted family man now reunited with his beloved wife Florence. John is predeceased by his wife, Florence, son, David, grandson, Chad, great grandson, Caden and his devoted dogs, Blue. John is survived by his four wonderful daughters Valerie, Pamela, Patricia and Karen as well as 13 grandchildren. The Nugent family would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude to Veteran Affairs and the Lumsden Heritage Home. The patience, grace and professionalism shown by the staff at the Lumsden Heritage Home is an act the family found reassuring and lovely. The family would also like to acknowledge the irreplaceable efforts of John's life long friends Jake Kutarna and Rand Teed who made John's transition comforting and peaceful. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lumsden and District Heritage Home or to the Mackenzie Art Gallery for education and exhibitions. A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2014, at the Lumsden Centennial Hall, 40 Third Avenue, Lumsden, Saskatchewan.

We were so sorry to hear about John's passing, so glad that we got home to share in the celebration of his life. I've known your Dad almost all my life, but in later years thru your Mom got to see the witty and artistic side of him. He has left behind a real legacy in both his family and his art. Our sincere condolences.

The last of the old crew has left us. John had a very dry and quirky sense of humor. He had a long fulfilling life, and has left a legacy of artistic achievements that will be enjoyed by many generations. Karen, Val, Pat & Pam - I am sorry I missed his memorial service. I am sure there were many stories and tributes to his life.

Dear Nugent Family,
I only had the privilege of seeing your father once or twice in my life. (I am Lila's daughter, Susie) But I remember his gentle spirit and was able to talk with him about art. I have always heard what great care you have given your dad. May you know God and His comfort in a deeper way as you grieve the passing of your father.

I remember John from Art School years ago and one of my fondest memories is fly fishing the streams around Cypress Hills with Ric Gomez, Ted Godwin, and John. They put on quite a show!

John was a great teacher. I took a sculpture class from him at the U of R and was inspired by his openness, creativeness and patience. Despite criticism, he adhered to his very high standards and integrity. Like all great artists, he was ahead of his viewers. His contributions to Canadian and Saskatchewan art will be remembered always.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Please accept our most sincere condolences.
Kim and I regret not being able to be closer physically, but in heart, spirit and family we are all one.
We are certain Uncle John is now at full peace with Aunt Flo and in God's care. What a special, special man your father was, and what a full life he was blessed with.

p.s. The photo you chose is outstanding!

Pam, Val and the Nugent family,
We always know that we will loose our parents but it is still very hard when it happens. Time helps with the grief but it is our wonderful memories that sustain us. I regret being unable to
attend the celebration of John's life but my thoughts will be with you.

Our condolences to all the Nugent family with the loss of your Dad. He was a great man, I enjoyed the time I was able to spend with him when I worked at the home and the short visits with him after I retired. He is now with the love of his life Florence of which he often talked about. They say time heals. You have family and friends, along with the great memories to help you through this difficult time.
