Edward E. Carithers, Jr.
Jan. 31, 1931 - Jan. 3, 2017
Atlanta, GA- Edward E. Carithers, Jr. passed away on Tuesday January 3, 2017. Born on January 31, 1931, Ed was the son of Edward and Margaret Carithers, both now deceased.
A native Atlantan, he graduated from Brown High and played college football at Georgia Tech. In his sophomore year, Ed married Mary Howard Watkins, a fellow Brown High graduate. Ed enjoyed much success playing football at Tech. During his tenure, the team celebrated both Orange Bowl and Sugar Bowl victories, and they earned the 1952 National Championship with an undefeated and untied season. After graduating from Tech, Ed worked in office supply sales for more than forty years.
He and Mary had two daughters, Julie and Lisa. Ed and his family were active members of Shallowford Presbyterian Church, where he served on the Session for seven terms. Ed was active in Hi Seniors, the Men's Prayer Breakfast Group, and was a co-facilitator of the Growing through Grief Group. He and Mary enjoyed over sixty years of marriage before her death in 2012.
Ed is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law Julie and Philip Groce of Macon and Lisa and David DeCarlo of Alpharetta and his grandchildren Harry Groce and Ashlyn and Austin DeCarlo. He is also survived by his nephews Cary Patrick (Lisa) and Kevin Patrick (Molly), their children and grandchildren, as well as a cousin, Gayle Boling.
A memorial service will be held at Shallowford Presbyterian Church on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. Interment of ashes will be private.
