EDEN — Dallas "Dal" Gwynn, 65, died Monday, February 18, 2008, at Hospice of Rockingham County following a ten-month battle with brain cancer.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, at Fair Funeral Home in Eden.
Dallas was born in Leaksville (now Eden), North Carolina, on January 23, 1943, to Dallas E. Gwynn, Sr. and the former Thelma Howe. Dal spent his youth in Eden, and he eventually returned to live in his hometown after many years away. Eden was always Dallas's home. The friends he made there as a child and young man have been loyal and steadfast for more than five and half decades.
Dallas was always a gifted student and athlete. He excelled both on the football field and in the classroom in high school and college. Dallas graduated from John Motley Morehead Senior High School in 1961. In 1965, he graduated from the University of Virginia, receiving a B.A. with honors in Liberal Arts.
Dallas worked for many years in international banking and governmental affairs. He traveled extensively in Eastern and Western Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. After returning to North Carolina, he earned his commercial real estate broker's license. He worked for Brown Investment Properties in Greensboro from 1999 until he was disabled by his illness.
Dallas's interests were wide-ranging and included world history, politics, the arts, reading, and, of course, football. He enjoyed nothing better than sharing stories and laughter with his friends, and forever trying to catch "the big one" on the beaches of North Carolina, especially Holden Beach.
Dallas is predeceased by his father.
He is survived by his mother, Thelma; his brothers, R.S. Gwynn and Andrew Gwynn; his children, Beth Gwynn Svendsgaard and Jon Gwynn, and his three grandsons, Jack, Harry and Gus Svendsgaard.
A gathering of friends and family will immediately follow the memorial service on Saturday, March 1, at the home of Carol Gwynn, 559 Glovenia Street, Eden.
The family would like to give special thanks to Russell Hatcher and Joy Sams, the staff at Arbor Ridge, Trip Brown, Martha Webster and everyone at Brown Investment Properties, Dr. Eric Neijstrom, the staff at Hospice of Rockingham County, and Carol Gwynn.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Hospice of Rockingham County, the American Cancer Society, the National Brain Tumor Foundation or a charity of personal choice.

I was sorry to hear of Dal's illness and death. My first memory of Dal is when we were Four years of age and we were mascots for the class of 1947 at Leaksville High School. I have fond memories of school days and ball games but as life happens and it takes us in different direction. I lost touch with many High School friends and others in Eden. My thoughts and prayer will be with his Mother, his children and those other friends and family who will miss him greatly. Gail Fagge Collier

I remember Dallas in High School as a guy who smiled a lot and had a little bit of a mischievous grin. I never had an occasion to speak to Dal but he was definitely a positive force.

I got to know Dallas through my wife as I would go with her to visit Dallas after he became sick. I was so impressed with his humbleness and caring attitude. He also seemed to make you feel better instead of you cheering him up it was the other way around. I know Dallas will be missed by all those who worked with him. Ronnie Webster ( Martha's husband )

Although I didn't know Mr. Gwynn, I know his daughter, Beth. I'm sure her kindness, warmth and intelligence came from him! Fathers and daughters have special relationships and I know the many memories they have together are precious. I wish you all peace.

Condolences to the family of Dallas. Although I was not a close friend of Dal, we graduated together in 1961 and I remember the grand old years of Morehead football and that he was a nice, well-liked, and talented young man. May the fond memories of all the good times help you through this time of grief.
