Reed Whittle Obituary

WHITTLE--Reed. We are saddened to report the death of Dr. Reed Whittle on August 12, 2008. Dr. Whittle died from complications of Sweet's syndrome at the age of 66. For more than 35 years, Dr. Whittle was an international management consultant to the leaders of Fortune 500 companies including Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Barclay's Bank, and several hospital chains and public utilities. His training as a psychotherapist as well as a management consultant gave him skills particularly useful to the field of human resources management. Dr. Whittle was born on January 25, 1942 in Jacksonville, Florida. He attended Culver Military Academy and Duke University. Active in the civil rights movement early in his life, he aspired to use the church as a vehicle for social justice and earned a doctorate from the University of Chicago Divinity School. For several years he served as a minister in the Boston area. Later he pursued post-doctoral work at the Sloan Business School at M.I.T. in organizational development and international management. Dr. Whittle was passionate about the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman, a scuba diving master, and a photographer. He traveled extensively, including Tibet, Papua New Guinea and the Amazon basin, where he spent several weeks living with a tribe. He is survived by his wife, Sassona Norton Whittle, two children, Scott Whittle and Dr. Amy Whittle, from his first marriage to Carolyn Lansden Whittle, his sister Sharon Utter-Whittle and brother Linford Whittle. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Immunology Institute, Mount Sinai Medical Center, 1425 Madison Avenue, Box 1089, NYC 10029. Funeral service at Frank E. Campbell (The Funeral Chapel), Friday August 15, 10:30am, Madison and 81st Street, interment at Pleasant Hills Cemetery.

My sympathies to Carolyn, Amy, and Scott. Reed and I enjoyed exploring the world of ideas in The Disciples Divinity House, and Reed and I encouraged each other to break all the house rules. I will always remember that twinkle in his eyes. Professor Dennis Outwater, Suffolk University, Emeritus
