In 1976, he served with Canada's Olympic Sailing Committee in Kingston, Ontario. Jim sailed across the Atlantic Ocean from Gibraltar to Barbados using only celestial navigation. One of Jim's greatest sailing adventures was In 1983, when he and Lise enjoyed a year of sailing along the Atlantic Coast, and among the islands of the West Indies all the way to Gaudeloupe.
One of Jim's artistic hobbies was constructing intricate models of sailing ships. Another important activity was music. In his youth, Jim played the trumpet and later enjoyed playing the piano. He loved to sing and was an active member of Ottawa's Capital City Chorus.
