Lucy Hottel Obituary

Lucy Randolph Hottel VIRGINIA BEACH - Lucy Tunstall Randolph Hottel passed away Jan. 12, 2008. She was born Dec. 7, 1910, in Norfolk. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Gray Tunstall, former longtime treasurer of the City of Norfolk, and Mary Franklin Duncan Tunstall. Mrs. Hottel was preceded in death by husbands, U.S. Navy Capt. Alfred Pace Randolph and U.S. Navy Adm. Martin Perry Hottel. She is survived by her son, Alfred Magill Randolph, his wife Jean Marie Heller Randolph, stepdaughter, Edith Hottel Petty and her husband William; three grandsons, Alfred Magill Randolph Jr., Esq. and his wife Kristen Petersen Randolph, Benjamin Gray Tunstall Randolph and his wife Kristen Mladick Randolph and Whitmell Heller Randolph; and great-grandchildren, Alfred Magill Randolph III, Ellie Michelle Marie Randolph, Christian Petersen Randolph, Benjamin Gray Richard Randolph and Peyton Tunstall Randolph to whom she was devoted. Mrs. Hottel was active over the years with the Virginia Beach Garden Club, the Junior League of Norfolk and the Colonial Dames. She was a past member of the Princess Anne Country Club where she enjoyed many years of bridge with her friends. She loved ballroom dancing and her spirit shined brightest on the dance floor where she competed into her 80s. Mrs. Hottel was a devoted Navy wife whose first husband, Capt. Alfred Pace Randolph, took her to many ports of call, including Honolulu, Hawaii, Bremerton, Wash., Newport, R.I., and Annapolis, Md. Upon his retirement, they settled in Virginia Beach in the late 1940s in one of the early homes built in Cavalier Park on Avenue C Extended, which is now known as Bay Colony Drive. She often reminisced about the simpler times in Virginia Beach when doors were unlocked and she knew everyone. After her first husband's death, she was later remarried to Adm. Martin Perry Hottel with whom she resided on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., before returning to her home in Virginia Beach in the 1960s. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk. Memorial donations may be made to the Mary's Garden Committee - maintenance fund. Mary's Garden is a patient garden at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital built by the Virginia Beach Garden Club as a community project. The address is Mary's Garden, 1222 North Bay Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
