WEST PEORIA - Laird Stanfield Carter, 81, of West Peoria passed away Thursday, July 16, 2015, at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

He was born July 3, 1934, in Peoria, Ill., to Asa and Izetta (Hummel) Carter.

He is survived by his son, Matthew (Jami) Thompson of Green Valley, and his two grandchildren.

He earned three degrees, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science from Bradley University in Peoria as well as a master's degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Laird worked at Ben Schwartz Food Mart for 37 years, retiring in 2000 as the Dairy and Gourmet Foods Manager.

Sorry for your loss. May he R.I.P. My most direct contact with Laird was during the short time he was a member of Mensa, although I dealt with him often at Ben Schwartz. He was one of a kind.

You will be missed Laird. You had a huge impact on my life and made me the man I am today. I wish I could have stayed in touch more once I left scouting. Rest easy, we will see each other again.

Laird was a wonderful man and a great Scouter. I am going to miss his stories with the Troop at our outings. Laird was always willing to help and mentor the youth in our Troop. A true Scouter with the examples he set. He will be greatly missed.

I remember Laird very well. He was the top student in our class at Calvin Coolidge and later was valedictorian at Central. I also fondly remember Doris who commented earlier from the Villages. David Lewis

I remember Laird well. We attended Calvin Coolidge Grande School together. He was probably the smartest student in our 8th grade
class. Not many of us left from that era. I remember you and your Mother living on Courtland. You family should be very proud of you.

Matt and Jami,
So sorry to miss the services! Please know I'm there in spirit! I'm so very sorry for the loss of Laird! He was an amazing person and even though no words can alleviate the pain you all feel right now, I do hope it helps somewhat to know that your extended family is here for whatever you may need in the days and months ahead! I love you! Sara
