Milton Weilenmann Obituary

Milton L. Weilenmann 1919 ~ 2008 A great man, Milton Lyman Weilenmann, died November 21, 2008. His mantra; "When I die, I want to be all used up" was reflected in the drive, energy, and passion he gave to life. Milt was born August 27, 1919 in Paris, Idaho to Swiss immigrants Marie Louise Huber and Gustave Arnold Weilenmann. His happy childhood was spent with his dearly loved sisters, Virginia Weilenmann Anderson (deceased) and Elaine Weilenmann Bennion. He graduated from South High School, excelling in debate, and the University of Utah, graduating in Political Science. Milt was called to serve a mission in Germany, after the outbreak of World War II, he completed his mission assignment in Oklahoma. He returned to Europe as a lieutenant in the infantry, and while on leave, married Marie Malstrom on July 3, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with seven children; Mike (Pam) Weilenmann, Martha (Gary) Starr, Margaret (Randall) Mackey, Merry (Jim) Fusselman, Melanie (Mike) Anderson, Mark (Louise) Weilenmann, and Melissa (Jay) Livingston. The time they spent in Vancouver, British Columbia, and their little ranch in the mountains bonded them together forever. Following Marie's death, Milt married Diane Nielson in the Salt Lake Temple on October 19, 1967. This was a busy time for both of them, filled with work, travel, church and community service, and the wonderful blessing of grandchildren. Milt's life was full of accomplishments, including serving as a full-time LDS Seminary teacher; restaurateur and owner of Bratten's, Ristorante Della Fontana, The Print Shop, Grandmother's House; opening and presiding over the Alaskan Canadian Mission and serving on the LDS Missionary Committee; State Democratic Party Chairman; State Economic Development Director under Cal Rampton; Democratic nominee for United States Senator in 1968; trustee for the estate of aviator Bill Lear; and creating joint ventures between private US Agriculture and Tianjin, China. His greatest achievement was to make whomever he was with feel important. Whether he was entertaining dignitaries, talking to caregivers, hosting employee parties, or spending time with grandchildren, each was valued and loved. He is survived by his seven children, 48 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, foster daughter Arene Newman; sister Elaine; cousin Glen Young, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at 12 Noon in the Ensign Stake Center, 135 A Street. Friends and family may call on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 from 6 to 8 pm at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple and also at the Church from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Interment will be in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Dear Weilenmann Family;
I first met President Weilenmann in early 1961 while serving as a missionary in Ketchikan, Alaska. I had been there seven months, having been transferred from Springfield, Oregon earlier by President Franklin D. Richards of the Northwestern States Mission. I shall never forget our first meeting when our new mission president came to Ketchikan as part of a goal to meet all the missionaries in the newly organized Alcan Mission. It was the first and only visit from mission leadership in the nine months I served there. We were really out of the loop, but were sent information and goals arising out of mission conferences and other meetings. I think President Weilenmann was impressed with our independence and work ethics notwithstanding the absence of direct involvment from Mission Headquarters. I shall never forget his kind expression of confidence in us all (Elders Donald Sagendorf, Dennis Housley, and Todd Gilbert Anderson). We all loved President Weilenmann dearly. And I can't forget when he and Marie had a new baby while in the mission, and being invited to gather around that big dining room table at 5055 Connaught Drive on the last day of my mission in November 1961. My wife Carolyn and I became engaged 45 years ago in Bratton's Grotto up on 21st South in Sugarhouse, and enjoyed our visits with President Weilenmann in Park City in the 60's. We left Utah for Pennsylvania and Arizona in 1970, but my mission experiences and love and respect for President Weilenmann continue until this day. May the Lord be with you all at this time.

Dear Weilenman family,
You will never know the love I had for President and Sister Weilenman. I served as one of their missionaries in Canada and Alaska. I remamber his Booming voice, the sermans he tought, his great love for the people and espicelly their love for their missionaries.
In reading the guest book it is amazing how far his missionaries have wandered. Perhaps, though, none further than my wife and me. We are presently serving a mission in Malawi East Africa. It is a part of the Zimbabwe Harare Mission. Never did I dream as I walked those frozen streets in Alaska that I would some day walk the Dusty roads of Africa. I am serving as a counselor to the mission President and preside and watch over the members and missionaries in this great country.
I was delighted to see Loyd Owen's message. I remember having dinner in their home when they were just a young couple in Anchorage. I have watched them in their assignments as they have followed President Weilenman's example of service to the Lord.
May we all remember and follow President Weilenman's example that when it is our time to leave this life, that our lives too, may be all used up in the service of the Lord.
May Gods blessings be with us all as we remember this great man and his impact on mankind.

As my Mission President and a life long friend since then, Milt is a Giant among men. He always had time for people and a genuine concern for them and their welfare. He exemplified the Love of The Savior and lived The Gospel to it's fullest.
Linda and I send our love to the family. Know that there has been a grand reunion on the other side of the veil, and it is but a short time when all will be together again.

Everyone needs a hero, and President Weilenmann fulfilled that role in my life. The months I spent living a floor above the family in the mission home taught me how a man can be a servant of the Lord, husband, and father. His great legacy will be remembered by all whose lives he touched.

To the Weilenmann Family,

Our hearts go out to you with the passing of Pres Weilenmann. It would be impossible to measure the impact that your mother and father had on the Church in Alaska. There are so many important events that they played a vital role in. The formation of the first stake, the first youth conference, branches being organized and so many wonderful new members that still contribute to the growth of the church. And how appropriate was the name given him: "Big Thunder". Gospel teacher extraordinare, motivator and exemplar. I am confident that there has been a wonderful reunion the "other side of the veil". As Alma said to his son, "it was not expedient that man should be reclaimed from this temporal death, for that would destroy the great plan of happiness." I love a Swedish proverb that says, "The only way to take the pain out of death would be to take love out of life." Milt Weilenmann was a very loved and admired man.

Dear cousins,
I am so sorry about Uncle Milt's passing. As the patriarch of the Weilenmann family, he was someone that I truly looked up to. I can't help but remember so many fond memories ... of working at Brattens, Christmas parties and numerous family get togethers. He will surely be missed. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you. Much love, Paula

Dear Mike and Weilenmann families:

I feel so sorrow to hear that your father passed away. He is such a great man.

I still remember the days when we were in China and in the United States, working tohether, having meetings, travling for business... he and his wife Diane devoted lots of time for the joint venture back in 1990's.

Also, I thank him and Diane all the help they gave to me when I studied at BYU. Although I was there without my family with me, I never felt I was alone because they invited me to have lunches, dinners with them almost every holiday.

I love and miss Milt and his wife Diane, best wish them sleeping peacefully.

Dear Family, The sorrow is so outweighed by the flood of the greatest memories of both your Father and your Mother. Having served at least nine months under four different full time Mission Presidents, your parents were far and away the best a missionary could hope for. I can still hear your Fathers' booming voice while trying to appear serious "Marie; you have got to stop keeping these missionaries up so late past their bedtime". At the end of many of those long days your Mother would lovingly tuck the kids in bed and then lovingly fix us home-made malts and ask about the days events.
What I experienced and learned from your Father and Mother, laid the gospel foundation of Eternal happiness for my eight children and our thirty plus grand-children. May the Lord's richest blessings be with you these next few days and forever. With love,

To the Weilenmann Family,
May you be comforted at this time. Milt lived a marvelous life. He was all that was mentioned in the obituary and so much more. Ever generous and loyal to my parents, they considered him to be among the best of friends. I have hundreds of fond memories of visiting you in Vancouver BC and of playing happily at your ranch in Parleys Canyon. Thank you all for your kindness to our family through the years.

Dear Weilenmann's,
I am saddened by the loss of Uncle Milt. I am so honored to have had a close association with such a great man. I will miss his cheerfulness, kindness and wonderful stories. He was always so fun to be around. His laugh was infectious. I am grateful for his love and respect for family. I am grateful that these family bonds will continue on for the eternities.

Dear Weilenmann family,

it was a great pleasure and lasting influence for me to serve in the Alaskan-Canadian Mission in 1962-1963 under President Weilenman-especially my short time in the mission home.

Even at his great age I am saddened by this loss.

To the Milt Weilenmann Families,
Our deepest sympathies to you at the recent passing of your father, Milt. We entered into a relationship in the early 1990's with Milt and a Chinese joint venture. It has been the ride of our lives meeting with, traveling with, and enjoying countless meals with Milt and Diane. We have floated the Yellow River on inflated sheep skins, rode Camels in the sand dunes, and found ways to resist and decline the 'rocket fuel' surved at all lunches and dinners. Our dealings with Milt were nothing but enjoyable and honorable. He was respected and admired by all of the Chinese associates as well as ourselves. We will miss him greatly but will cherish the fond memories of him trying to wrestle and wrangle two companies from different countries, different cultures, and with very different ambitions! We love Milt and Diane and wish them peace and rest.

Sincerely,
Ken, Roger, and Jay Adams

Dear Mike, Pam, Margaret and Randy,
We send our love and our sympathy in the passing of your noble father. The memories are sweet of so many good times which he so generously provided. We reflect upon the deep fried fish and chips at the Fathers and Sons outing when we were little boys. The special occasions which always seemed to be capped off with a trip to Brattens will never be forgotten. The years of compassionate service provided by Milt, as he inspired all of us with his lessons of unselfish giving.
We are grateful to have known him early in life and to have learned from his powerful example.
Although over fifty years have passed since those early childhood years, please know that the rich memory of your dad lives on in our hearts. Thank you for carrying on and expanding such a rich legacy.
He will be missed, but so much of what he taught us lives on forever. True Gospel principles provide such comfort and peace. May your entire family be blessed in knowing that your dear Father lives and that his life of goodness will be remembered forever.
With love and admiration.

I was an Elder in Vancouver when President Weilenmann was President of the mission in 1961 and 1962. I will never forget him and his wonderful family. I was one of the first missionaries to start the mission home in Vancouver. I remember the kids and Sister Marie. My condolences and sympathies to all of you at this time.

Weilenmann family;
We lived in Juneau Alaska when Bro. W was our mission president. He seemed to love coming to Juneau just to visit sometimes. We would bake a salmon and enjoy our time together. He was present when our oldest daughter was baptized and gave her some reassuring words when she was so scared of the water. We will always have fond memories of him and your wonderful mother, Marie. She taught all the Relief Society to dip chocolates, He, along with the husbands enjoyed eating the results... Happy memories.
May the Lord bless all of you in knowing you will all be together again.
