1950 ~ 2017
On October 30, 2017, a hard-working, kind, generous, brave, and funny man passed away from metastatic cancer of the pancreas.
John Raymond Shaw was born June 12, 1950 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Raymond Harrison and Ruth McConnel Shaw. John graduated from Utah State University in 1972 with a B.A. in English.
John married Janice Durr in 1979 (later divorced) and together they had three children: Ian Nathaniel, Austin (Anne), and Dereck Shaw. John married Lani Lee on November 5, 2005. They enjoyed their years together in Salt Lake City before retiring to Mesquite, Nevada.
John loved history, politics, and playing golf with his son Austin, cousin Cory, and many close friends. He will be remembered for his excellent cooking, especially his homemade pies. John and Lani traveled to Europe, Victoria B.C., and several southern states. Family vacations to Hawaii, Costa Rica, Washington D.C., and Baltimore were very memorable. They recently enjoyed a Caribbean cruise with close friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents. Survived by his wife, children, sisters Ann (Jerry) Fullmer and Mary Beth (Gregg) Sheppard, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John recently said, "I'd like people to remember me however they want." A celebration of life will be held in June 2018 in Salt Lake City.

John was my cousin and although we didn't see each other a lot growing up because he was in Utah and I was on Navy bases on the East Coast, I always felt an affinity with him. We were born six months apart and were both English majors in college. Intellectually and spiritually, we both had an independent streak. His father, my Uncle Raymond, had a heart as big as his booming laugh. Ray would periodically look in on my mom, who was a widow, and the seven kids she was doing her darndest to raise. I would see John at the occasional family gathering. Over the last year we had reconnected. And now he is gone. My condolences to Lani, the rest of his family and all his friends who had the privilege of knowing him better than I did.

I first met John as a freshman at USU. He was my roommate but ultimately became my dear friend as if he were my brother. The fun we had was monumental. We dressed up like Santa Claus in the middle of summer so we could get good looking girls to sit on our laps, the memories flood through my brain like a mad rushing river.

He got the nick name "jude" and I don't remember why. I think it may have been because of the Beatles. However his favorite song, which he played endlessly was Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones which we all began to hate he played it so much. I think he even wore out the record.

My wife and I moved to Washington in 1984 so the time I spent with Jude has been less than what I would have wanted but overtime I was able to see him was an incredible treat.

In all the years I have known Jude he was never happier as he was with Lani. Lani you lite up his life.

Jude is one of a kind and I will always love him.

We will miss you John and your great sense of humor. Were so glad we got to make a pies together on Thanksgiving last year. It was a lot of fun. All of us having Mimosa's on the patio. We are all so sad you are gone, but we know you will be enjoying that big golf course in the sky.
