Thomas A. Dwyer

On Sunday, February 24, 2019, Tom Dwyer, a loving husband and father of four children passed away at home just shy of his 84th birthday. Four things defined Tom: his love of God, his love for his wife and children, his love for dentistry, and his love for the University of Southern California. For a time, he loved fly fishing too, but he gave that up after losing his wife in 2005. He said the best part of going fishing was coming home to her. With no one to come home to, there was no reason to fish.

Tom was born March 12, 1935, the second son and third child of Edward and Hazel Dwyer. He graduated from Garfield High School in East Los Angeles, served in the Navy and Naval Reserve for four years and, thanks to the GI bill, completed pre-dental studies at East Los Angeles Junior College and graduated from the USC School of Dentistry in 1962. He practiced dentistry for 56 years, officially retiring just two months before his death. He loved being a dentist and he was good at it and he was most proud when he saw a crown he'd done still doing its job after decades.

For the last 20 years he travelled to Los Angeles three times a year to watch USC football games and visit with family and dental school classmates. He looked forward all year to these trips.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Catherine. He is survived by his sons Scott, Craig, Curtis, and daughter Cathy, 12 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

So sorry to learn of his passing, I just found out the news today!
I worked with him in his Dental office from 2002-2004. I will always remember him as a kind and very gentle hearted man! Plus, him playing his "Jimmy Stewart" tapes on a slow day or in between patients. Thankful for the opportunity to work along side him in what he loved doing the most!
My condolences & prayers to the family.

Tom was our dentist for over forty years and a great friend to us. We will miss him and his competent services as a dentist. We enjoyed knowing him and Cathy and had fun chatting about our families with both of them.

Our thoughts and prayers to all the family.

Dr Dwyer was my dentist for 50 years. I remember when Cathy, his wife, was receptionist. Could not have asked for a better team! I started taking my kids to him from birth. My oldest became a dental hygienist in part due to Dr. Dwyer. I am sorry I can not be there today at the funeral as I was planning to, but it snowed over night and still is snowing now. I will send prayer off for him and his family. He will be surely missed!

We were so sorry to learn of Dr. Dwyer's recent passing and our hearts go out to his family. Dr. Dwyer was our dentist when we lived in Newport Hills. Besides being our neighbors, we also considered Tom and his lovely wife, Cathy, our friends. We initially met them through our mutual love of walking our dogs (Duke, Fletcher, Lacey & Dylan) on the pipeline right of way. We later enjoyed exchanging Christmas cards with Tom every year and sharing our travel stories. Tom and Cathy were both very kind and generous people and are sadly missed. We take comfort in knowing they are finally together again. Joe & Debbie Twardoski
